What if Gore really doesn't want to be president?
Perhaps a future scenario:

Gore fully backs Obama for president. Obama gets elected and creates a cabinet level position of Secretary (or some such term) of Global Warming and puts Gore in that position so that he can dedicate full time to this most serious of problems.

Not bad?

1. Just put Gore at the head of the Dept. of Energy or Interior...
and task him with Global Warming as his chief concern. No need for even more bureaucracy, yeah?

But in any case, I'm slowly coming around to the idea that Gore will run. Even though he hasn't set up a fundraising mechanism, he has already carefully laid out events that will keep his name in the media through 2007 -- the book in May and the concert in July, for example. Despite not announcing his candidacy, he seems to be cultivating publicity.

2. If Gore really didn't want to be president...
he would have distinctively removed himself from the process by now. He has not done that yet, therefore it tells me he's still "toying" with the idea of running.

6. He has even said precisely that.
He is considering it. He has said so.

9. Damn! It was posted here in another thread a couple of days ago.
I wish I had saved it. It was in an interview with one of the major newsies. He was asked about 2008 and he more or less said that he had no intentions of running, but that he hasn't ruled it out. It was the strongest statement that I've heard he said with regards to 2008.

N.B., his language was still very soft and noncommittal.

I think the guy is conflicted about this. He knows if he jumps in it will upset the apple cart. But I think he is tempted to jump into the race, because otherwise he wouldn't be leaving the door open a crack.

We'll see about this come autumn.

4. Then why did he run before and why won't he categorically rule out a run now?
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 12:22 PM by John Q. Citizen
Gore would love to be president. And I'd love him to be president.

And we have time on our side.

Gore is qualified to be President, undoubtedly.

If Gore is president, he can set the national agenda on global warming, health care, war and peace. Gore will be able to hire whoever he wants to implement US policy.

5. Gore is keeping his options open
I don't think he wants to get into a public fight with Hillary and her husband. He knows that it would not look good and could seriously damage the Party.

It's possible that Gore will endorse Obama. It's even more likely that Gore would not endorse anyone, and let the primary process run its course. To be linked with one candidate might damage Gore's ability to continue as an effective advocate for the environment. He has repeatedly said that he wants the climate crisis to be recognised as a moral issue, addressed on a non-partisan basis.

But if Hillary's campaign runs into problems between now and October, or if the polls show that Hillary would not be able to win the Whitehouse, I guess it's possible that Gore might "change his mind" and decide to seek the nomination.

Certainly for me it would be a dream come true! :)

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore! :patriot:

10. Can you think of anyone better to clean up this pile of shit?
He's like Ghandi without the revulsion toward exercising political authority. It would be easier for him than for anyone else and he knows it.

11. I'd buy that.
But, until Mr. Gore endorses, I will continue to support him. :bounce:
