New Elon Poll: Clinton leads Five Southern States
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former New York May-or Rudy Giuliani hold an edge among prospective candidates for the White House in five southeastern states, where most voters remain undecided, according to a poll released yesterday by Elon University.

Thirty percent of those polled who said they would vote Democratic supported Clinton, 14 percent backed Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, and 8 percent supported former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards. But 24 percent said it was too early to decide and 22 percent didn't know who they would support.

"While the number of people who aren't sure who they will support in the upcoming election shows that we're very early in the process, it is somewhat unexpected to see Hillary Clinton, a New York senator, doing so well in the South," said poll director Hunter Bacot.

"It is particularly unexpected with a viable Southerner, John Edwards, in the race," he said. "If these findings hold over time, the race for the Democra-tic nomination may be over before it starts."

In North Carolina, Clinton led with 32.4 percent to Edwards' 13.5 percent, and Obama had 9.5 percent. In South Carolina, where Edwards was born, he had 5.6 percent, and Clinton and Obama each had the support of 16.7 percent of the Democrats polled

The poll was conducted Feb. 18-22 by the Elon University Institute for Politics and Public Affairs, which surveyed 719 residents in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The margin of error was plus or minus 3.7 percent.

1. And after leading at this point in '04, Joe Lieberman went on to win the primary!
NOT!

It's pretty stupid for the poll director to say "if these findings hold over time..."

He, of all people, should know better.

4. It's called the aura of invencibility
Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 12:52 PM by NDP
Many southern states suffer from the digital divide, especially in rural locations which are most of those states. The people there get 90% of their information from the television news. When the television news tells them on a daily basis that Hillary Clinton is already the nominee, that is what will be reflected in the poll numbers. Once it becomes clear to them that Hillary Clinton is not a sure thing, or shouldn't be, the numbers will shift.

So, Bill Clinton wasn't that popular in the south, and we're supposed to believe that Hillary Clinton is based on some duped television news watchers? Please.

I'm sure the Hillary media heads will come out with the same deceptive talking points that you just did. At this point, it's all about the fact that the news media keeps pushing Hillary. As for Obama, his race will hurt him in the south, which these numbers prove, because next to Hillary, who else's name gets mentioned on a daily basis? His and no one else's. John Edwards can't even go on a show without being asked about Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama, as if he works for them or something.

5. One major problem with your theory is ...
television news DOES NOT tell them on a daily basis that Hillary Clinton is already the nominee. No, it has not happened.

Can you tell when someone is being "sarcastic"? The point is, the media portrays Hillary as the inevitable nominee, and people do as they always do and coalesce around the perceived winner. Is that clearer?

41. One, only a blind person would not see the media trying to shove Hillary down our throats
Two, yes, the bandwagon effect propelled John Kerry to the nomination. You don't win the nomination just by winning Iowa, you know? It was the media chorus that began screaming that Kerry "was" the nominee, so the people in the other states followed suit. A person would have to be pretty naive not to acknowledge that.

40. Do you live down here?
Yes - they do hear that. When one considers that most Southern rural folk get their news from Faux and rightwing talk show hosts - yes, they DO hear that HRC is the inevitable nominee.

I know - I hear it myself. All I hear on talk radio on my drive to and from work (and I have a shorter distance because I live in a city - not in the county commuting to the city for work) is about the Stop Hillary Express and the Hillary this and Hillary that. I RARELY hear about any of the other candidates - Obama occasionally, but they honestly NEVER mention that anyone else is even running. Mine wasn't one of the Southern states polled, but I can see where the news probably isn't that much different in the Carolinas and Georgia.

We don't have AAR or many alternative news sources - I've complained about that ad naseum on this board.

Edited on Mon Feb-26-07 05:55 PM by NDP
The fact of the matter is everyone knows who Hillary Clinton, the media coronated inevitable one is, and even though Edwards won SC in 2004, less Democrats in the south still feel like they know who he is than know who Hillary Clinton is.

"In his backyard." Please. I really do get sick and tired of tired old cliches. People who live in apartment complexes have backyards as well, but that doesn't mean that everyone else in that complex "knows" who they are.

But she's anything but weak.If I were the type to gamble on elections my money would be still be on her, easily.I truly don't want her to win and I'm not going to shy about saying so,but I think she's going to be the toughest to beat for a variety of reasons.

Anyone who thinks she wont be a factor at the end is deluding themselves,I think.

That's why the media want her or Obama. They want the Democrats to "experiment" 2008 right into the loss column. Let's spend all of 2008 talking about whether a woman or a black man can be President...not. What a huge waste of time for 90% of campaign coverage to be focused on that. The dumbification of the USA continues.

7. First off, we're a year out.
Second off I'm weary of polls, especially this early.

Whats the scope on Elon's polling? Is it usually very reliable? Any past polls that were dead on? etc.

If it's reliable, it's good to hear Hillary is holding her own. But I'd like to know how reliable they are first, and I'd love to see where these poll numbers are a year from now when we'll know if Hillary will even be the nominee or not.

"What has Hillary Clinton done to be in the lead in any polls"?

The answer is absolutely nothing except being named "Hillary Clinton." I repeat: These "name recognition polls" mean nothing.

a tidbit of her accomplishments.

On October 11, 1975, Hillary Rodham and Bill Clinton were married in Arkansas; she kept her name. In 1976, Hillary Rodham joined the venerable and influential Rose Law Firm, specializing in intellectual property cases while doing child advocacy cases pro bono.
President Jimmy Carter appointed Rodham to the board of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978.

In 1978, with the election of her husband as Governor of Arkansas, Rodham became First Lady of Arkansas, her title for a total of 12 years.
In 1979, Rodham became the first woman to be made a full partner of Rose Law Firm.
In 1980, Bill Clinton was defeated.
In February 1982, Bill Clinton announced his bid to regain the office, which would be successful; at the same time, Rodham began using the name Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As Arkansas' First Lady, Clinton chaired the Arkansas Educational Standards Committee, where she successfully fought (against some opposition) for improved testing standards of new teachers.<9> She also chaired the Rural Health Advisory Committee and introduced a pioneering program called "Arkansas' Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youth," which trains parents to work with their children in preschool preparedness and literacy.
Hillary Rodham Clinton was named Arkansas Woman of the Year in 1983 and Arkansas Mother of the Year in 1984.

Throughout her time as Arkansas' First Lady, Clinton continued to practice law with the Rose Law Firm. In 1988 and 1991 the National Law Journal named Clinton one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America.Clinton co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and served on the boards of the Arkansas Children's Hospital Legal Services and the Children's Defense Fund.

I have never seen this all in one place. I know she's dedicated and brilliant; but have not been able to elucidate this very well. I will be copying your posts to scatter around to naysayers.

One thing no one ever has the guts to acknowledge is the debt the country owes her for keeping her marriage and Bill together during the Monica crisis.

I don't know why it's so hard for women and men to admit that they forgive their spouses for infidelities and other mistakes all the time. She showed fortitude, compassion and love; and, this nation is better for her handling of her earth shattering difficulties. She is a strong and very capable woman; well qualified in all respects to be the first female President of the United States.

GO, HILLARY, GO!

35. I repeat, what has Hillary Clinton done to be in first place in the polls? Nothing, considering...
...that most of those polled don't have a clue about any of that, not that it screams "President," anyway. It's all name recognition up to this point.

30. Edwards is only pulling 13% in his home state...
I will say it before and I will say it again: I do not believe Edwards will be considered a "first tier" candidate by the time of the Iowa caucus (if he is still in the race).

I could be wrong, but I think it's all downhill for Edwards from here.

31. I disagree.
Edwards has been working building on the ground alliances. He has a good chance.

32. He could reverse this if...
He manages to pull off an impressive performance in the upcoming debates, but... it will be hard... his battle is quite uphill...

Even those lying ARG Polls had Edwards at 30% in NC. I'm pretty sure I could "create" a poll and put together a sample to get the results that I want. Tell me, if the Republicans want Hillary to be the nominee (which they do), and they own the companies that either sponsor or conduct the polls, do you think it's beyond the reach of the Republicans to create polls that give the appearance that Hillary Clinton is destroying the field, or do you think that that's ridiculous, and something that not even the GOP would stoop to doing?

It's early, but not too early for tricks or for people being duped. :banghead: And no, I'm not saying that she isn't out front, but people need to stop thinking that some poll today means anything for January 2008.

I repeat. What has Hillary "done" to be in first place? Absolutely nothing. So why would people "act like" she is?

36. But...but...but...
...she was a victim! The Right-Wing has been vicious to her! Her husband cheated on her! She's a strong woman! They've thrown everything but the kitchen sink at her but none of it's stuck! She has the best political advisor in the country at her side, and together they'll bring back the peace and prosperity of the 1990s! She won over voters in upstate New York along with her Republican colleagues! Our country owes her our undying support!

44. Edwards should really throw in the towel....
if Clinton has almost double the points of his in his home state. I guess North Carolinians are too smart to be fooled by Edwards' double-talk.

53. Wrong again wolfie
The actual winner of the poll was:

Too Early to Tell and Don't Know: 46%

The Hillary: 30%
Barack: 14%
Edwards: 8%

Looks like a name recognition thing once you get past the thinking folks...nice try...
