The house thing re: Edwards
At first I didn't know what people were talking about concerning Edwards and his house until after I read a number of threads. I am reminded of something Jane Fonda wrote about in her autobiography concerning the house she lived in in Santa Monica when she was married to Tom Hayden. He made her sell her mansion and move into a tiny place in Santa Monica that her father, Henry Fonda, referred to as "The Shack." She describes it as real dump. Hayden really dominated her and thought it would look bad if they lived in a big ol' house. She wrote that she believes it is not the size of one's house, but rather one's political and world view and what they do with their money. If you are generous and give of yourself and your money to make the world better, you don't have to live below your means to try and prove something. In her book, Hayden really comes off as a phony trying to role play. If Edwards and his wife moved into a 1,500 foot townhouse, he would be attacked as a phony too.

1. Amen
Even middle class families live in 3000 ft homes. I see the Edwards' place as for many friends and visitors to come and stay without being crowded, play, engage in sports, and have some room for John to go jogging around the compound. I would think it could be difficult for Edwards to go to Gold's Gym and get any privacy, as well as running in public. Moreover, security is very important.

5. This house issue
is about actually a month old - if it really had any teeth, it would have been blazing across the news bigger and faster than this. It's crap, total crap and it's all they can sling at him at the moment. Has anyone asked what size and to what cost the homes that the Clinton's own? Or perhaps Obama, McCain, Romney? Let's face it, it's takes a lot of money to run a presidential campaign and those that don't have the money or the ability to raise it, they are dead at the starting line.

8. Vanishing resources
I understand your point. Edwards has money, and there's no reason that he needs to live like a poor man. He does a superb job in talking about issues affecting the poor and middle class. But that's not the only issue that's important. As an environmentalist, I am very concerned about conservation of our resources and taking care of our earth as much as we can. To me, this means not paving over more space than we need and using more energy than we need to be comfortable. Is there a reason that he needs 10,000 square feet for a house? Does he plan to use some of the space to host political gatherings? Does he plan to use the 20,000 square foot recreational facility to host groups of children? If it's only for him and his family, then I think it's too much and I'm disappointed in him.

9. It is time to end Houseboating threads
Edited on Sat Jan-27-07 10:39 PM by benny05
Focus on energy and conservation matters...and most of all, ending a senseless war that Repugs wish to surge and win. "Whoopie, we're all goin' to die"....Country Joe and the Fish.

Wasn't it great Jane Fonda was at the Peace March today?

10. This is my problem with the whole Edwards house thing...
Edwards is supposedly first generation rich. Maybe in his past he was a great lawyer and he socked away all his money. ...But, as far as we know, he’s a full time senator/presidential candidate. He’s been that way for years now.

How could he afford this house? This house cost about $6 million, the up keep will be very expensive. Taxes, heating it, getting a team to mow the lawn...even if he became an honest president, he’s not going to make a lot of money.

I’m very concerned about the fact that back in 2002 he didn’t just give Bush the power to go to war, like Hillary did. ...Edwards co-sponsored Joe Lieberman’s resolution authorizing the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq. ...Edwards along with the likes of John McCain and Zell Miller.

Then as we’re trying to stop the surge, John Edwards is being hawkish towards Iran.

I just hope he didn’t move over to the dark side...I don’t think it’s wrong for us to keep and eye on him.
