5. I kept expecting acid of some kind to shoot forth from Condi's eyes.
She was really giving Kerry the evil eye.

Kerry was good about keeping Condi on topic.

6. He failed to force her to answer his original question,
which was what mechanism would Bush use to determine the END of US involvement, given that Bush (& Rice) claimed that U.S. support was not "open ended". She went on and on about the various elements of the new "effort", but never said how the U.S. would measure Iraqi compliance sufficiently to continue or discontinue U.S. involvement.

8. Right, but those without access to the video would not know that.
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 01:06 PM by Divernan
And unfortunately, Senator Kerry's time was cut off before he could end with a blunt challenge to her for NOT answering his original question. When you have limited time to get someone on the record, you need to keep pushing the single point until you force the person being questioned into a corner and until you have pinned them down. He got distracted into discussing what he saw on his last visit to Iraq, etc., which gave her openings to respond to those comments, rather than his primary question.

11. The question though was taken up by others.
Each Senator was only supposed to have 7 minutes. But a lot of these questions that Condi sought to punt were picked up by other Senators.

We have reason to be proud of each Democrat in that hearing today. They were all amazing. What a difference an election makes!

included a trip outside the Green Zone along with talks with Syria's leaders.

14. Of course it's relevant in many ways, but with ltd. time, you need a narrow approach.
Hey, I worked my butt of as a volunteer lawyer for Kerry's election effort in PA. I adore the man. I'd vote for him again. I'm just saying that he coulda/shoulda been more aggressive with her and pinned her down on that issue. It's the basic principle of cross-examination.

17. Kerry, Dodd and Boxer were a tag team today. What one didn't cover the
others did. Perhaps he could of gone at her more aggressively to get an answer from her on that point, but he did get her to admit that other things are not in place, like a plan B and any plans for diplomatic talks.

on Condi. The ref could have called the fight after Feingold, if you ask me.

I thought that question got passed along. It was a critical point to make and it did not get dropped.

Seriously, this was a great hearing. I felt so good about donating to all those new Dem Senators last fall. Boy was that ever worth it!

21. That last exchange between Hagel and Rice was bizarre. Or rather
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 01:29 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
her response to his assertion that she hadn't told the truth when she denied that the Iraqis were fighting each other, Sunnis with Shia and vice versa.

Unless I misheard, she explained that they were'nt all fighting each other. To say that would be to give the wrong impression. The Iraqi leaders working with the US, presumably their government, were trying to put an end to the sectarian violence by the men fighting for their local "despots", as she described them.

Well, call me ingenuous, if you will, but I have this uncomfortable suspicion that neither Hagel nor anyone else would have expected their men in the Iraqi parliament to be moonlighting as insurgent grunts or even leaders (despots). It is a civil war, Iraqi on Iraqi. Period. And to deny it on such grounds is absurd.

26. Rice's response, when Kerry asked her if their war in Iraq was open-ended,
what mechanism of accountability there was, is just as bizarre. Oh, no, of course it wasn't open-ended!

However, when further pressed, "There is no plan B. You work with Plan A", she replied - presumably implying, that you make it work!"

Well, this strange Hitlerian "Triumph of the Will" syndrome displayed by the Neocons, across the board, was noted with amazement by Woodward in the third volume, "State Of Denial", of his recent trilogy. Aaah, the triumph of the will would be a wonderful thing, if only it worked.

As I recall, when Hitler was finally condemned to opt for a single Plan B, he chose a characteristically lunatic one: "Scorched Earth"! The wanton destruction of the remnant of his own country and people. Since they were unworthy of him! One can only hope that this crew are a little more sane.

34. Condi talks about the Al-Anbar region
But the Marine Corps already said that Anbar is lost militarily.

Another person familiar with the report said it describes Anbar as beyond repair; a third said it concludes that the United States has lost in Anbar.
