a spectacle (terra alert, capture of a "terrorist", or execution of a dictator) would tend to distract the attention of the reliably fickle MSM from any impending bad news that the administration might have had bottled up.

Good clean "christian" family fun. Throw in a few beheadings before the main event, drag the bludgeoned bodies around the stadium to the roar of the crowd. Then falwell and dobson can flip the switch as Husseins body tumbles from the platform, the "christians" go wild. Alas, nothing will change in Iraq, the blood will flow even greater. Once again, bush has failed.
