Selective Service to "test" Draft machinary..

The Selective Service—the federal agency that would be integral to any draft effort by the Bush administration—will perform tests on its system equipment, The Associated Press is reporting.

Selective Service "is planning a comprehensive test of the military draft machinery, which hasn't been run since 1998," writes Kasie Hunt. "The agency is not gearing up for a draft," an agency official told Hunt, and "the test itself would not likely occur until 2009

Bush's Secretary for Veterans Affairs, Jim Nicholson, meanwhile remarked that "society would benefit" should the draft return; he later issued a press release stating "he does not support reinstituting a draft."

Fear among Americans of a military draft are rising as the situation in Iraq worsens. President Bush yesterday admitted for the first time that "the United States is not winning the war in Iraq" and said he is seeking expansion of U.S. armed forces.

Heh..
Bet all those College republicans are wetting themselves right about now..

1. Not good news at all. So there is a way for dimson to become even less
popular; seems he might be pulling out all the stops. I guess he really does want to secure a legacy.

3. Sustain the fizzle
So far all the real ominous escalation, besides W assuming more and more personal powers to ward off fears(mainly his own), has not occurred. Hopefully tremendous war debacles and terrorist strikes will not materialize to stampede hysterical rush to drafts and martial law. He may WANT to and be working for such
chaos to hide in, like Nixon and others, but he is even less capable than any predecessor if well opposed. These are all preparations for fear scenarios(the main fear being losing absolute power and being punished) which may as likely end up in his resignation as what they portend.

It is all about fear, not national benefit or clear policy.

4. The FCC uses the old Vietnam-era bingo-style number picker
when awarding licenses (or they did several years ago when awarding cellphone licenses). Wonder if they'd give it back to the draft board to use?

5. The 100 year war?
Well...you can't have an endless war without cannon fodder? I wonder if young people will vote before it happens? But maybe they would like to be in a war? It would be a really neat adventure....or so they might think before hand.
