Interesting Comment About Rudy G in WaPo Article
Edited on Wed Dec-20-06 10:34 AM by Crisco
"If the Republican Party wants to send the social conservatives home for good, all they have to do is nominate Rudy Giuliani," said Rick Scarborough, a Southern Baptist minister and president of Vision America. "It's an insult to the pro-Christian agenda. . . . He's going to spend a lot of money finding he can't get out of the Republican primaries."

I think this looks good for Dems. If Repubs refuse to nominate their best candidate for a national election, Dems can only gain.

ETA: oh, and the irony of all ironies, dear DLC:

"Republicans do understand it is political suicide to keep this red-state, blue-state thing going any longer," said Barry Wynn, former chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party and a recruit to Giuliani's banner. "We need someone competitive in all 50 states."

2. Giuliani has NO chance of being nominated.
I said it all along, and I'm sticking with it--The 2008 GOP nominee will be Jeb Bush.

4. My Dark Horse Wager, Mr. Bacon, Is Newt Gingrich
He has been gardening the rubber chicken circuit a la Nixon in the sixties for a decade, and has harvested a great many local organization and grass-roots chits by the endeavor....

6. Let Us Hope, Sir, That
In the words of the rhyme, he shall be shat upon by elephant doody...

While his prospects in the primaties strike me as good, he would be about the worst candidate for the general election the opposition could put forward.

8. Repubs don't need it
As hard as it is for us to comprehend, the average voter will assume a Repub is strong on national defense until proven otherwise. And doubly-proven at that. Look how long it took for most of them to figure out how incompetent Bush is. Even now, many figure he's just incompetent in every way, sort of an exception that proves the rule.

Rudy has no real foreign policy experience, but people don't perceive him that way. Perceptions are more important than reality.

Conversely, Dems are assumed to be weak until/unless there's something to prove otherwise. That's why Kerry had to run on his war record, and why the Repubs had to spend so much money to destroy it.
