WE WILL NOT FORGET
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 09:51 PM by NanceGreggs
WE WILL NOT FORGET
By Nancy Greggs

I have no doubt that when the current crop of elected Republicans bow their heads these days, their most fervent prayer is that we, the People, will lapse into a state of collective amnesia – and the sooner, the better.

Having watched their former colleagues pack up their offices over the past few weeks, ready to head out of DC in the aftermath of the mid-term elections, I am confident there isn’t a GOP senator or congressman who isn’t thinking that this, but for the grace of God and a forgetful citizenry, will be their fate when their own terms expire and they face the now-dreaded prospect of campaigning for re-election.

As the GOPers try desperately to distance themselves from BushCo and its obvious failures, I am reminded of Richard Dreyfuss’ line in Jaws, as he looked into the cold stare of the merciless shark for the first time: “We’re going to need a bigger boat”. And so it seems the Republicans still in office are going to need a bigger bandwagon, as they attempt to get on-board with the current we-never-supported-this-whacked-out-administration stance they are presently adopting quicker than you can say “cut-and-run”.

The pebbles that have started slipping, seemingly unnoticed, down the mountainside – like the ‘sudden’ realization that maybe invading Iraq wasn’t such a great idea after all – are merely the precursor to the inevitable avalanche of desperate Republicans who will, over the course of the next few months, denounce the actions of the very president whose praises they could not sing loud enough over the past six disastrous years.

In the spirit of bi-partisanship the Republicans are now so enamored of pursuing, I will proffer the following – lest they be lulled into a false sense of security about their future political prospects: We, the People, will not forget – not now, not two years from now, not ever.

We will not forget how, as you sent our troops into combat, you voted to cut their pay and their benefits at the same time you handed billions of dollars to war-profiteers like Halliburton without a modicum of accountability.

We will not forget that our soldiers went into battle without sufficient body armor while billions of taxpayers’ dollars went ‘missing’ without a single question being raised.

We will not forget the times we were called “Godless” as you condoned torture, “unpatriotic” as you allowed this president to ignore the Constitution without consequence, “bereft of moral values” as you protected the corrupt among you, or “defeatists” as we embraced reality rather than the propaganda you spewed in an attempt to garner support for what you knew, or ought to have known, was a lost cause in Iraq.

We will not forget the handouts to the wealthy, the tax-breaks to the corporations, the outsourcing of our jobs, nor the debt you incurred at the expense of our children and our grandchildrens' future.

We will not forget the destruction of our environment for the sake of corporate profits, the kow-towing to religious leaders whose undue influence on our government was ignored in hopes of capturing a voting block that would keep you in office.

We will not forget the Bankruptcy Bill that lined the pockets of the credit card companies and financial institutions at the expense of hard-working middle-class citizens, nor the policies that funneled billions into the accounts of the pharmaceutical industry while our most vulnerable citizens sickened and died because they could not afford life-saving medication.

We will not forget the children whose ability to compete in the global job market has now been diminished by your lack of oversight of our public educational system, nor the deterioration of our infrastructure as our treasury funds a winless war of choice and energy power-brokers reap the benefits of “secret meetings” with this administration.

We will not forget the cronyism that elevated the incompetent to positions that required decision-making in situations that literally meant the difference between life and death.

We will not forget the homeless you have ignored, the jobless you have created, the numbers of uninsured you have contributed to.

We will not forget the victims of Katrina, those who fell below the poverty level during your tenure in office, nor the corruption that led to the investigation, indictment and imprisonment of your own party members whose greed literally knew no bounds.

We will not forget the arrogance of your self-righteousness, your support of an administration you knew to be inept and totally uninterested in the well-being of our nation and its citizens, nor the fact that you put the interests of your corporate contributors above the interests of your country.

We will not forget that as you debated non-issues like flag-burning, everything our flag symbolizes – democracy, freedom, working together for the common good of the country – was being dragged through the mud. We will not forget that you were all too willing to turn a blind eye to things like signing statements and executive actions contrary to law, while rubber-stamping every whim of the petulant, immature idiot you placed in the White House under questionable, if not outright fraudulent, circumstances.

We will not forget that as that president broke the laws of the land, spied on American citizens, lied the country into war and then displayed an ineptitude in conducting that war and governing the nation literally unsurpassed in the annals of our history, you not only gave your unwavering support, but had the audacity to question the loyalty of those who demanded a return to the very freedoms this democracy was founded upon.

So if you are still living with the ridiculous notion that we will forget, I would point to the countless reminders we will live with for years to come: the permanently handicapped soldiers who will be among us, the sad anniversaries marked by our neighbors and friends of the death of a son, a daughter, a spouse, a parent in Iraq or Afghanistan; the heroes who fought so tirelessly who now beg for quarters on our street corners; the devastation still evident on the streets of New Orleans; the headlines that tout the ever-growing profits of oil companies that continue to prosper under the policies you endorsed; the bankrupt, the evicted, the homeless, the dead.

So as you ponder your political future, remember this above all: We, the People, will never forget.

And some day, some way, we will take what is ours; that is our country. The USA was founded on the principles of alol men created equal and representative government. No indeed, we will never ever forget those ideals. We want our country back. And we will have it.

11. We will not forget--and some of them will not remember.
Their votes were forgotten as soon as made--there was no thought besides the framing and the clamor of chattering talking head teeth:

"9/11 changed everything."

"There is a war on."

"The President is trying to keep us safe."

"We have to give him the tools he needs."

The needs of the people, the actual power to unite with their interests in mind, to strengthen the country in ways that count, were ignored in favor of chasing a dragon (or a chimera...or a snipe) in Iraq. An opportunity was missed, because it was not seen.

Trying to set them straight, to make them see the blown opportunities, the waste of lives and money, the sheer weight of the negligence, bad intelligence, misgovernment, and all around foolishness, will be difficult for some, who never guessed that they had the ability to stop it all. Creatures of the political machine, they rolled with the daily message of "Support the war of terror" and never guessed that the fight...was horror. That the dry actions taking place on paper, were physical nightmares for others elsewhere. The connection was never made.

And when the finger is pointed, they really will ask--

"Who, me?"

19. I will not forget that 9/11 happened on the REPUBLICANS' watch.
And I won't forget how republicans snookered stupid me into believing that "big government is totally incompetent... all the so-called services it provides would be MUCH more efficiently delivered if we'd just let those smart, efficiently-run private corporations run them."

Now, years later, I look around and see our highways being sold off to those "smart, efficiently-run private corporations". :puke: (Since those highways were built with taxpayer money, shouldn't the taxpayers be given the money that is paid for them when the corporation buys them??)

Only trouble is, I have now gotten a good look at the corporations: for pure evil, they make "big government" look like Santa Claus by comparison.

45. NANCY, YOU ARE SOOOOOOO

BLA BLA BLA, REALLY YOU ARE! It is not your fault but it`s true....

As for every body else who isn't able to understand. One day, hopefully very soon, our children and grand children will ask one question: "How could it be that you believed the silliest story in the world for so long?" That day will hit you like a fastball. And one of my still many hopes is that your answer won`t be: "I didn't know, how could I?" We, as Germans, are still working to acknowledge that nearly everybody knew in the core of his/her/their hards. The only way is the truth and the wisdom it carries within.
My hopes, that everybody has something good inside, are christian, humanitarian and so called "civilized" cultivations which, for 35 long years, strangled my free will and disabled my ability to judge emotionally and mentally balanced. We all, via all kind of media, join education day by day, but we are supposed to believe that education ends more or less with childhood. I do not remember the name, but I saw a documentary about a tribe in the amazon, in which the age for adultery was approx. 53!!! That made me think a lot. These people ,learning each and every day from older people, need so long to make a teacher themselves. And it`s definitely not stupidity which let them need so long.

"It`s ambition and movement that makes us live" is what we hear every day. The german translation of the word "ambition" is a very good example for positive trimming with negative terms and is in itself very honest! It`s "Ehrgeiz". Composed of "Honer" and "avarice" it literally translated means exactly that: missing honer. But the message is repeated so often in positive manner and the movement keeps them from thinking so that most people do not understand or in worst case ignore the real meaning. They believe it`s an aim. And I doubt also that the english word is treated right. It`s "ambi" that performs the meaning. You have to be in touch with both sides of you to be successful. That`s it! Far too simple? Words had a meaning not so very long ago.

And the "unthinkable" is told you to be unthinkable! We all need to wake up!

Think about.....and have a nice day, really! I am not "ehrgeizig". So called "looser" :)

I`m out!!!

50. I'm so pissed at Pelosi
What twisted political theory is she being ruled by? How else can we begin to heal and have the world even start to respect us again, if we turn the other cheek to ACCOUNTABILITY????? Talk about forgetting? This woman is kicking me in the gut and making me feel WORSE than before the election! At least then, I had some hope. What is this woman THINKING? Just let them walk away with their bags of money, while we try to clean up the carnage left behind by their reign? She's as OUT OF TOUCH as the rest of them! What did she think we went to the polls for? It was the last hope of our smothered little voices in the tsunami of insanity, even when we feared our vote may be stolen yet again. If we don't show the world we're sorry, that we were wrong, then we'll be doomed to be hated for generations to come! I have copied about 12 articles calling for hearings, indictments, and impeachment and mailing them to Ms. Pelosi. I'll print this 'rant' too, and put it on top of the pile.

Also, don't forget that the cold hearted freaks (McCain included) voted down an amendment to the brutal bankruptcy bill, that would have exempted the troops from the harsh new law. HOW do they sleep at night??

PS.......Nance, for some reason I couldn't see your column last week. Your page (on my favorites) was blank, and I couldn't link from the main DU page either. Was it me or the site? When things don't work right, I'm always suspicious that "THEY" are hacking our internet!
