This is going to piss a lot of you off, but I'm a Democrat.
I'm not a non-aligned liberal or progressive who tends to vote for Democrats.

I'm a Democrat.

I'm not an antiwar activist who sees the Democrats as a better choice than the Republic Party to further my agenda.

I'm a Democrat.

I'm not an enviromentalist who sees the Democrats as friendlier to my objectives.

I'm a Democrat.

I am antiwar.
I am concerned deeply about my planet.
I am concerned about the poor.
I am concerned about rogue business interests being put ahead of the people's interest.
I'm concerned about the security of my country.
I'm concerned about governmental corruption.
I'm concerned about the loss of jobs.
That's just a short list sampler. I'm many other things, politically, but first and foremost ......

I'm a Democrat.

14. I am an individual intertwined in a society
Identifying with any label gives you grief in the long run since change is a constant.

These aren't labels in the sense I mean --

"I am antiwar.
I am concerned deeply about my planet.
I am concerned about the poor.
I am concerned about rogue business interests being put ahead of the people's interest.
I'm concerned about the security of my country.
I'm concerned about governmental corruption.
I'm concerned about the loss of jobs."

Democrat is though.
What happens if other self-identified Democrats hold positions you don't agree with?
The answer can be seen here on DU every day (maybe not your answer, but the answer of many here).

Unfortunately it often seems that this sort of insight has little place on a political discussion board, whatever the variety of the board, Democratic, Republican, leftist, or freeper.
Pity.

30. Just today I stood up and said before you go further -
I am a Democrat.

I had to call my parents financial adviser in the middle of very red state (Kansas) to ask some questions regarding my parents financial matters. He went off on the awful changes that the Dems were going to cause to the tax/inheritance laws, blah, blah, blah. I stopped him in the middle of his rant and gently said "I am sure you don't hear this very often in your very red state but I am a Democrat".

He just started sucking air and could not respond. I let him hang for awhile and finally said - Ok, lets go on. Still he could not respond because he had been such an ass. I remained silent. Finally he apologized. I just said thank you. I made no attempt to make him feel better by saying - oh, that's ok. What an ass - probably assumes he is going to lose an account. He is right.

I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat.

- Will Rogers

We'll always be a herd of cats, a spectrum.

And that's what I cherish about us. The day we all start goosestepping in some lockstep cult worship of one single political authority, that's when I'll know I've died and gone to Hell-- and woken up in the party of the GOP. I'm not much on fealty oaths. To ANYONE.

From left to center, from "Anti-war activists and environmentalists, liberals and progressives" --all belong and compete to push important ideals and ideas--- and are no less Democratic for caring about policies that affect and matter to them and their families deeply.

There are no mythical generic "Democrats".

I'm not getting your point.

I'm a liberal/progressive who tends to vote for Democrats.

I'm an antiwar activist who sees the Democrats as a better choice than the Republic Party to further my agenda.

I'm an environmentalist who sees the Democrats as friendlier to my objectives.

I'm also a registered Democrat.

I am antiwar.
I am concerned deeply about my planet.
I am concerned about the poor.
I am concerned about rogue business interests being put ahead of the people's interest.
I am concerned about the direction of public education.
I'm concerned about civil liberties.
I'm concerned about fair elections and open airwaves.
I'm concerned about governmental corruption.
I'm concerned about the loss of jobs.

Is there a reason why THAT should piss someone off? Whether or not you put party before issues, or issues before party, if we are working for the same issues, why would anyone be pissed off?

I am concerned about the poor.
I am concerned about rogue business interests being put ahead of the people's interest.
I'm concerned about the security of my country.
I'm concerned about governmental corruption.
I'm concerned about the loss of jobs.

I vote Democrat almost 100% of the time because I live in Texas and the Democrats most nearly reflect those values. If I lived in a part of the globe where a party stood a reasonable chance of election and that party better reflected those values (or if I lived in a part of the globe where there was a parliamentary form of government where a minority party could have a real say in a governing coalition), I'd vote for that other party.

In Abe Lincoln's time, I'm sure I would have voted with the Republicans and I would have reviled the Democrats.

In our time, in our country, I vote with the Democrats nearly 100% of the time not out of party loyalty but on ideological grounds.

I'm just glad you vote with me, and I don't care if you vote with me based on shared ideals, party loyalty, family tradition, or based on the fact that you had a much beloved pet donkey as a child and you have a deathly fear of elephants rising from a trauma you suffered at a circus when you were a small child. I'm just glad we vote for the same candidates.

party's primary and that is all that is required.

If Texas required party registration, I would register as a Democrat (I have always voted in every Democratic primary).

That's the way you establish formal party affiliation. It's so simple, I always wondered why other states even bother to include the "party" blank on their voter registration forms.

DNA-level Dem here, too...and the ONLY ONE in my whole family. Ever since I left home for university and started thinking for myself, I've realized that my most dearly-held values were far more "democratic" than those of the people I grew up with.

Can't explain it. I had more or less the same upbringing as my neo-con siblings--it's as though I'd incarnated into the wrong milieu. Out of 12 or so close relatives, I was literally the only "left-hander". It's a cellular thing! I could NEVER be a Republican. SG

54. Ummm....
And this is wrong, WHY????

My mom is a Democrat:
- she is African-American and wants to see people-minded African-Americans in office, and knows that it was the Democratic party to whom Fannie Lou Hamer appealed in the 1968 National Convention
- she is pro-choice and wants to see like-minded politicians
- she's a feminist and wants to see more women candidates, especially African-American women, like Shirley Chisholm.
- she wants protection from government from corporate greed, from stingy prescription plans to over-building of mini-mansions
- she is moderate on defense, and prefers to see money spent on the needs of American citizens, but has a healthy respect for war, having sent a husband to battle in WWII.
- she recycles, drives economy cars, keeps her house temp around 68F, feeds birds, lets deer graze in the backyard and works actively to preserve the environment as well as its flora and fauna.

I feel no shame in saying that my mom has influenced my political views since I was ~9 years old. However, my dad was unaffiliated, and from time to time, it is my preference. I admit to voting for Bill Weld, Republican governor in Massachusetts. From time to time, I want to see the slate of Republican primary candidates, and have some influence there.

However, right now, I am a registered Democrat. And for the next two years, I'm likely to stay that way. There's been too much at stake for me to sit on the sidelines and pretend to be neutral.

60. You are free to define Democrat however you wish. I define it as this:
Party registration.

Beyond that, there is variance on all other issues.

The true measure of a politician is not the party with which he is affiliated but the principles he wishes to carry forth. If there is any measure by which a politician is judged, then I would submit that that alone is the only valid measure.

70. The only worse thing than using the "sarcasm" smily...
...is announcing why it is that you're not using the "sarcasm" smily. Next time you tell a joke, wait until right before you tell the punchline, then stop, pause, and say "I'm not going to tell you now that the next thing I'm gonna say is going to be the punchline to this joke." 65. OMFG Again with this Shit...
Yes, yes, Husb2Sparkly, everyone is totally pissed off. You're so unconventional. You're such a fucking rebel. Are you happy now? Did you get that out of your system now? Do you feel suitably self-important now? I long to pat you on the back. I long to marvel before your altar of Sticking it to the Man. We get it, already. We get it we get it we get it. You're different. You're you're own man. You have your own principles and fuck conformity! Huzzah. We fucking get it already.

76. I don't put anyone on ignore
Besides, it's better to call people on their pretentions than it is to ignore them. That works both ways. You're free to do the same to me; I suspect that you did in the pre-edit post, which I thankfully did not read. But I stand by my comments. You represent yourself too frequently as some kind of heroic, non-conventional straight-talker. Or something. I really don't care one way or the other, but the pretention of it is a bit much for my tastes. Cheers, Rebel Rebel.

69. Jeeze louise, what a demogogic, straw man, platitudinous load of hogwash.
"I don't care who I piss off, I think it's wrong to slap orphans. I know others may berate me, revile me, call me coward or owl-raper when I say it's wrong to slap orphans. But dammit, slapping orphans is wrong. And the younger they are, the wronger it is.

"Maybe it's not "cool" or "hep" or "with it" to say orphans ought not to be slapped. Maybe I won't get invited to any of the suave society parties where people sip champaigne and cuff the little street urchins brought in for light entertainment and that pleasant after-tingling sensation on the palms. But then, maybe I'm just crazy enough to think there's something immoral about physically abusing the helpless. I'm willing to go out on a limb for these values and I don't care how many of you I offend by this.

"I am prepared now for you to crucify me for my beliefs. I eagerly await your scorn."

78. Hell, I've even signed legal affidavits that I was a Democrat!
(you have to, to run for office under the party's imprimatur)...of course, I was always a Democrat anyway, but never "registered" as one (Washington state doesn't have party registration).

85. Your post doesn't bother me ...
... but I do have a question. If you're a Democrat, what's Joe Lieberman? What's Hillary Clinton? What's Ben Nelson? What's Bill Nelson? It seems your views are rather different from theirs.

87. They're Democrats, not demons from hell. I disagree with them on lots of things ....
... but they're Democrats. Well, Lieberman's an exception. He chose to leave the party. During the campaigns I studiously refered to him as 'the self-selected third party candidate' which, while not technically true (there were several other minor party candidates in that race) said what I was thinking.

The others you named are very highly rated by their constituents. And that's what they get paid for. If you're wondering if I endorse any of them for ... say .... president in 08, the answer is no.

But, except for Lieberman, they're still Democrats.

89. Yes, but Lieberman calls himself a Democrat.
I suppose I'm just suggesting that saying one is a Democrat means very little if Joe Lieberman can say the same thing.

What takes balls to say, these days, is, "I am a liberal."

I am a liberal.
