You list your preferences in descending order. You look at all the 1st choices and eliminate the one with the lowest number, moving on to the second choices of those you eliminate. You repeat until someone has a majority. If someone does not list another choice and they had just been eliminated, they no longer have a preference, though most systems continue to count them in determining the number needed for a majority.
