Call to Action: Google-Bombing the Election
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 01:05 AM by sarahlee
Just wanted to make sure everyone here knew of a new action about to launch. The work started Chris Bowers started the work at MyDD and Daily Kos and will be ready to launch Monday or Tues. I know DUers will be able to help with this.

Why
According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the number one way that voters use the Internet for political action is to search for information on candidates. During the final two weeks of the election, it is reasonable to expect that as many as twenty million voters will be searching for information on candidates online. During this key time, this project will help push the most negative article written by a non-partisan media source on all key Republican candidates to the forefront of any search for that candidate. The negative article will appear both high on all Google searches for the candidates, and as an advertisement that appears whenever anyone searches for that candidate. By giving this article two prominent locations on Google searches for the candidate, and because it will come from a non-partisan source, it will increase the likelihood that the article will be seen and trusted by those searching for information on the candidate.

How
The campaign will proceed as follows:

Step One: With help form readers at Dailykos and MyDD, I will compile a list of seventy article, one for each targeted race. Every article will focus on a different Republican candidate, and will be written by as generally trusted a news source as possible. It will also present as unflattering a view on the Republican candidate as possible. All of these articles will be placed into a database that I will maintain with the help of willing volunteers.

--Step Two: Once the database is complete, BlogPac will purchase Google Adwords that will place each negative article on the most common searches for each Republican candidate. Simultaneously, I will produce an article on MyDD that embeds that negative article into a hyperlink that names the Republican candidate. I will then send a copy of that post out to as many bloggers as possible, who can also place the post on their blogs. One posting of this article will be enough.

--Step Three: All further discussion of the Republican candidates in question on all participating blogs should include an embedded hyperlink that will increase the Google search rank of the article on the given candidate.

The result of this should be that the most damning, non-partisan article written on every key Republican candidate for house and Senate will appear both high on every Google search for that candidate, and automatically as an advertisement on every search for that candidate. BlogPac will cover the costs. The netroots will supply the research.

Aftermath
If this program is successful, after the election the advertising and Google-bombing program will continue. However, instead of targeting Republican candidates, it will be done in order to benefit and increase the search engine visibility of the very best local, progressive blogs around the country.

UPDATE:
Note that Chris says he has the money for the ads:

We have the money

Don't worry about that--we should hve the money. But you can contribute to BlogPac here. what we really need are colunteers. If you want to help, post articles or send me an email at chirs@mydd.com, if you want to go deeper.

3. I read about the project earlier today...I give it an K & R...btw
Make sure that the article that is linked to, is already in the Google cache, and if possible, find an article that has the Candidate's name in the title and is already in the top, say, 40 results for a search on the Candidate's name.

My recent research on linking, tells me that Google has put the brakes on projects like mass linking, giving slower, steady changes in ranking over a longer period of time...With time of the essence, move a page from page 2 or 3, to page 1...don't pick pages that are #268 in Google's results.

Good luck, I'm with ya!

4. Great Advice
Did you share with Chris?

I was working on some spreadsheets for voter integrity so just read about it - late to the party and have not read all the comments at both sites yet.

8. Perfect. Thanks...You Know, before the '04 election, I called the DNC

...And suggested they "reshuffle" (with my help),the top 30 results for "John Kerry", so newsmax and GOP.com did not define our man on page #1 of Google. They brushed me off, saying they might be accused of manipulating information. Oh well, I tried.

So I do know the plan..

12. In the comments at Kos
Someone asked Chris how much the DNC was paying Chris for doing their job. There was a great response I will share here:

This isn't the DNC's job anymore.

The people have to take back political activism. The perception that there are certified agencies that will handle elections and advocacy is becoming extinct. We don't need to rely on them anymore. They haven't been doing their job anyway.

This is our job now.

15. Use It Or Lose It: Full Frontal Assault
If you don't know about the effort to get those Dems with safe seats and big warchests to share with other Dems, you can read the details in Chris' update here:

http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/10/23/95348/704

Call the ultra-safe Democrats in your state on this list. When you call, you will be told that these Democrats have already given money to Democratic challengers and party committees. Don't be daunted: Here are several ways to respond:

* Tell them that you know they have already given this cycle, but our target list hasn't been this deep--60-70 Republicans seats!--in over twenty years, and it needs to be fully funded, so they need to give more.
* Tell them the grassroots have never given this much before, and safe Democratic incumbents need to do the same.
* Tell them the DCCC and the DNC are taking out loans of more than $10 million in order to fund seats that have not been competitive in a decade.
* Tell them the time to buy new media is running out, and with every passing day, media buys will become more expensive for our candidates.

Remember, you won't be alone when you call. Thousands are joining you around the nation. Call ultra-safe Democratic House incumbents in your state today. Tell them you will sing their praises far and wide when they give 30%. Tell them we have to use this money, or we could lose these elections. It really is that simple.

You can report your calling experiences in the comments, or follow this link to MoveOn.org's action report page.
