FOLEY TOUCHED PAGE ON HOUSE FLOOR
The last sentence brings it home. Read on . . .

The page, Richard Nguyen, a first-year student at the University's Gerald Ford School of Public Policy, said he saw Foley pat a male page's behind. Nguyen did not report the incident to authorities. At the time, the then-16-year-old thought it was "questionable activity," but he was unsure how to interpret it. "I mean, you see athletes patting each other's asses all the time on the field."

(CUT)

Nguyen said many of the pages in his class were suspicious of Foley. "We always saw that Mr. Foley was very friendly to male pages," he said. "There were signs, for an observer like myself, but I never knew what I know now."

Nguyen said he never felt threatened. The dormitory where he and the other pages lived was guarded by police, and the page program enforced curfews and a buddy system.

"I always felt safe when I was there," Nguyen said. "But then again, I was a Democratic page."

7. um, where have you people been?
"Nguyen" as "wen' has been around quite a while.
case in point: I went to my neices high school graduation (st. Paul Central) and there were more "nguyens' listed among the graduates than there were Olsons or Petersons. And this is Minnesota. As I recall, the Johnsons still had the lead.

There are a couple of Nguyens on the poker tournament circuit, and I always though they were pronouncing it WIN. But Wen and Win sound close enough.

just like the name Hermanson would sound differently in Texas than it would in Maine.
regional differences held over from the homeland...

60. I'm embarrassed to admit...
that when I graduated from Technical School (in MN - almost 20 years ago), I had to read the graduates' names as they came on stage for their diploma (I was a broadcasting student and myself and a handful of the other broadcasting students each read a portion of the graduate names).
Anyway, there was a student on my list with this name and I butchered it - I had never heard it before. A group of people in the audience actually shouted it out at me like I was an idiot. Unfortunately, because they all shouted it out, not in unison, I still didn't catch what it was supposed to be and so wasn't able to correct myself. I thought they said, "wyen" or something like that, but I wasn't sure. It was one of those moments where you just want to slink off and hide. :yoiks: :hide:

Nice to know, all these years later, how it is actually pronounced.

This makes no sense. How does one's political affiliation determine the threat one faces from harassment? How would a harasser know and why would he care? If Mr. Nguyen's animal attraction can't reach across political ideology, I have to wonder if he's really the irresistible studmuffin he imagines.

I believe it was in context to if he felt threatened by FOLEY a REPUBLICAN. As a Republican it appears from the stories breaking over the past week that Foley, who is a Republican, only went after Republican families kids, as far as has been reported. As a Democratic party follower, the teen made a rational judgement that he was safe from the pig Republican child molester.
