Sex scandal may cost Bush's party critical votes

By DPA

Washington, Oct 5 (DPA) Just as US President George Bush sharpens his party's election rhetoric on terrorism, a Congressman's sexual Internet adventures threaten to put off some of its most fervent voters.

<snip>

The furore 'could be the tipping point' that makes enough Christian-right voters stay home to swing Congress to the opposition Democrats, said Larry Sabato, head of the University of Virginia Centre for Politics.

<snip>

Polls show Bush's approval ratings stuck around 40 percent and the Democrats within reach of winning control of both houses of Congress next month.

<snip>

It's also a worst-case scenario for the white evangelical Christian voters who gave Bush and his 'family values' party nearly 80 percent of their vote in his 2004 re-election - nearly 40 percent of his total tally.
