Poll question: How do you think the average US citizen feels about torturing Muslims?
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 10:20 PM by Husb2Sparkly
Not how **you** feel about it. How an average voter feels about it.

(edit to fix typos, not substance)

Sorry, polls are turned off at Level 3.

1. They feel about it the same way they feel about the war.
They don't, because it doesn't affect them.

5. I think your average American thinks Muslims deserve to be tortured for
being Muslims. No other reason is even necessary. "They all look alike to me!"

Americans are simply breathtakingly ignorant.

6. Americans oppose torture in large numbers
Edited on Thu Sep-28-06 10:47 PM by MN Against Bush
The average American citizen is not an inhuman fascist and we can't pretend that they are. Most Americans have very little clue of the extent of the Bush Administration crimes. Most Americans don't like Bush, and I can guarantee if all Americans were as informed as DUers Bush would have been driven out of office long ago and would probably be facing trial right about now.

If Americans were to sit and watch a person be tortured they would be outraged. Eventually the magnitude of this legislation will sink into Americans, and I can guarantee that there will be some major outrage when that time comes.

Those who think voting for torture will win them votes are wrong. Dead wrong. This BETTER be an issue that the Democrats keep fighting on. If this passes they need to campaign to REPEAL it.

7. Sadly, like this:
This is purely anecdotal, but I think reflective of the overall "national mood" regarding this issue. I was at the pet boarding office/house/pound, whatever you want to call it, to fill out the paperwork for our two cats because my wife and I are going on an overseas trip next week.

While waiting for the owner's tags to be assigned, I ran into a married couple I vaguely know because they belong to our homeowners association: he's a Dentist, she's an Attorney, both working professionals, both I would classify highly intelligent. Turns out they're going out of town, too, and were there to drop off their dog. The conversation turned to the local news; they're planning to build something or other close to our neighborhood that has folks up in arms. I asked, "by the way, do you know how that torture vote in the Senate came out" - I'd been running around and hadn't heard myself.

Blank looks. "Hadn't heard about that," he said (she shook her head negative, also)...and after an awkward silence his face brightened and he said "but what about the crappy call in the OU-Oregon game a couple of weeks back?!?"

There's what I think the "average" U.S. citizen's take is on it - bring American Idol On! And I don't say that with any sense of joy or pride: today's vote is as shameful a one as ever held in the United States Senate. I just wish more of my fellow citizens realized that, and would vote accordingly.
