How does calling a country's president the devil different from calling
a country (or its leader) "evil?"

Just wondering

2. its a tad more direct
the devil is the king of evil whereas those who are evils can merely be agents of the devil... But I get your point, I made it over lunch.

3. It doesn't
So why is it orgasmic when Chavez does it and horrific when Bush does it.

4. Let me take a stab at this!
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 02:01 PM by KansDem
Because...our president...was...the one...who...um...uh...called a foreign country...or leader...uh...um..."evil"...and that makes it o.k. But...a foreign leader...who calls...our president...um...uh..."the devil"...is wacko???

Did I get it right? :D

on edit: Oh, I get it now...it's the "D"--"evil" is o.k., but "devil" isn't. Man, this logic thing is hard!

5. That's absolutely correct...
which is why Chavez made his comments so over the top. It's also why he got such a huge ovation. Chimpy thinks he can run all over the world imperiously and most hypocritically calling this guy evil and that guy a terrorist. People like Chavez have had enough.

9. All I know is that Chavez got more laughs with his line.
And I'm still laughing. Reagan and Bush weren't going for laughs.
They were decorating their demagouery..ism...ishness.

10. Is this a trick question? Is it because the Devil is evil incarnate?
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 01:22 PM by no_hypocrisy
Is it because evil is an adjective and the Devil is a noun, representing an entity that is recognized by a certain demographic as true and real as you and me? Is it because it takes the concept of evil to its highest application?

Honestly, I don't see the difference between calling someone evil or the devil, nor do I see the difference between Chavez and Bush calling each other names like 5-year old boys on a playground.

11. It's just FundiSpeak
Like when they get up there and say 'Homosexuality is evil!'

And a gay person stands up and says, '.. but I'm not evil!'

The reply is "I DIDNT CALL -YOU- EVIL, now did I?"

<sigh>

14. The wording appears to take the burden off the American people.
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 01:43 PM by Poll_Blind
Just a thought. I was thinking about the wording myself. Chavez has made a point of courting the American people while verbally excoriating the Boosh Administration, itself. Calling Boosh "the Devil" has a different inflection than, for instance, the Ayatollah Khomeini calling the United States (collectively) "The Great Satan" or Ronald Reagan collectively calling the former Soviet Union "an evil empire".

Truthfully, when rhetoric reaches biblical or eschatological levels, such nuances are lost in the halo of emotion around those words or phrases.

Among the pantheon of nicknames for Bush that Chavez has used, I personally favor "Mr. Danger" but to the American ear that might have a favorable, even Bond-ish, ring.

15. it doesn't, and it probably gets a similar reaction
Do you think that the citizenry of the countries whose governments chimpy has labelled as "evil" have all stood up applauding chimpy or do you think that, just maybe, some of them didn't much like chimpy saying it...

17. So because Bush is a poor diplomat, that excuses poor diplomacy?
Many here rightfully deplored Bush's language with axis of evil and evil doers and all that bullshit.
