DSCC calls on Bush to condemn Allen’s slurs; cancel Aug. 23 fundraiser

Bush Must Condemn Allen’s Slurs Ahead of Fundraiser Next Week

August 18, 2006
By: Phil Singer, DSCC

Bush Should Cancel Next Week’s Fundraiser For Allen: Why Would He Want To Reward Allen’s Despicable Behavior?

With George W. Bush scheduled to hold a fundraising event next week for the bully known as George Allen, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) issued the following the statement demanding that the President condemn Allen’s comments or cancel the fundraiser:

“By not condemning what George Allen said, the President is giving tacit approval to comments that have no place in the public discourse. It’s not good enough for the President to say Allen apologized. Allen’s remarks were despicable and Bush has an obligation to say so,” DSCC spokesman Phil Singer said. “If the President refuses to condemn Allen’s comments, he should at the very least cancel his fundraiser for him next week or else it will look like he is rewarding Allen’s behavior.”

On Wednesday, Bush will headline a private fundraiser for Allen’s re-election campaign at the Fairfax County home of former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie. (AP, 8/9/06)

A new Rasmussen poll out today shows that after leading by double digits, Allen’s lead has dropped to just five points (47-42). A month ago, Allen led by eleven points. Yesterday, a SurveyUSA poll showed Allen’s approval rating falling and revealed that two-thirds of Virginians believe Allen’s comments were inappropriate.
