In 1980, Reagan never said how he'd resolve the hostage crisis
Perhaps he knew he wouldn't have to.

15. October Surprise
Here's a website link I keep handy, for when I encounter worshipers of Saint Ronnie of Reagan. There's some good scoop there about the 1980 election and the October Surprise.

http://www.geocities.com/thereaganyears/1980election.ht...

And while I'm at it, here are a couple of other links that I use to debunk the common myth that Reagan was anything more than a witless idiot:

2. The hostages took off from Teheran airport...
As he had his hand in the air, taking the oath.

I know this because I heard it on the Strategic Air Command shortwave frequency. All the way back in 1980. Raygun was taking the oath on the TV downstairs.

3. Jimmy Carter accomplished their release...
Reagan had nothing to do with it...

On the other hand Reagan did get what, 250 Marines killed in Beirut!

4. Umm, no. It was an illegal deal done through
back, back channels. With bags and bags of cash and guns and drugs changing hands all over the world.

12. I think we are talking about two different things...
I am talking about the release of the embassy hostages in 1980...which took place as Reagan was being sworn in for his first term!

Iran-Contra was much later, and involved hostages of terrorists in Lebanon

14. You need to do some reading
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 11:10 PM by bananas
The Reagan campaign made a deal with Iran,
if they held on to the hostages until the election,
they would get a better deal than Carter would give them.
That's where Iran-Contra started.

edit: you can start here - with Robert Parry's excellent reporting

won the election...James Baker and GHW Bush had cut the deal for Iran to hold the hostages until Reagan was sworn in, then release them in exchange for military supplies and spare parts (from Israel, which Reagan replenished for free). Once the Iranian's figured out Ronnie really was that duplicitious, they kept grabbing more hostages to be released for more supplies...they could have worked that scam forever, but the media broke the Iran-Contra scandal, and put an end to that.

It is not widely appreciated here that the scandal came as something-less-than-a-surprise to one Saddam Hussein, who knew Iran was being resupplied by Israel, and suspected they wouldn't be doing that without US approval. To show his appreciation for being double-dealt, Hussein sent Reagan a little love note...in the form of two Exocet missiles fired into the USS Stark.
