Iran Test-Fires 10 Surface-To-Surface Short-Range Missiles During Large-Scale War Games
By NASSER KARIMI
The Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran test-fired 10 surface-to-surface short-range missiles on Sunday, a day after it launched a series of large-scale military exercises throughout the country, state-run television reported. The Saegheh missile had a range of between 50 and 150 miles, the report said. It did not specify whether the missile was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, but it was not believed to be.

The military exercises come as Iran faces heightened international scrutiny because of its contentious nuclear program and for supporting the guerrilla group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution last month calling for Iran to suspend uranium enrichment by Aug. 31 or face the threat of economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Iran, which claims its nuclear program is peaceful, has rejected as "illegal" the binding resolution, saying it had not violated any of its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty. But it promised to offer a formal response to a package of Western incentives on Tuesday.

we speak scheming up another war that we can lose.

edit: Not that I don't think they were doing it anyway, I just imagine that this has just sped up their plans. I mean, the Middle Eastern countries aren't bowing down and kissing as like those two criminal administrations think they should. It's a severe erosion of what they see as their power to dictate world events.

They gotta do something, even if it's something stupid and criminal (as usual).

Officials see correlation between Hezbollah conflict, Iraq actions

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Rocket attacks on a U.S. base in eastern Baghdad doubled during the monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah, a U.S. Army commander said this week, echoing concerns expressed by other American officials about Iranian support for Shiite militants in Iraq.

Lt. Col. Mark A. Bertolini of the Fourth Infantry Division said the increase in Katyusha rocket attacks on Forward Operating Base Rustamiyah seemed related to the fighting in Lebanon.

Soldiers on the base are under orders to wear body armor and helmets when outdoors. Though the incoming rounds have been sporadic -- usually no more than one or two a day -- they send soldiers scrambling to bunkers at the sound of the base siren.

Iraqi Shiites supportive of Hez bollah regularly vent their anger toward the United States, Israel's close ally. "The Middle East is a volatile region," said Bertolini, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment from Fort Hood, Texas. "Everything affects everything else over here."

U.S. officials in recent days accused Iran of stirring up Iraqi Shiite militants.
