Another win, convincing them one at a time . . .
Had lunch with a Republican voting friend at a favorite watering hole and as usual the conversaton turned to politics. He's on my email list--the list I send editorials to about Republican vs Democratic issues--so he knows what's comming when he agrees to have lunch.

We went back and fourth, point for point, and he finally uttered the words that tell me he has no answer and no defense for the current Republican party, "Well, Democrats are just as bad . . ."

That's a sure sign that he's given up and can't defend his voting record. So I pat him on the sholder and say, "I understand. It's like me and the sailboat. I should have sold it two years ago but I just didn't want to admit that I couldn't afford it. You're there on all the important issues but you just can't force yourself to admit it and vote Democrat."

He just sat there and stared at his empty beer mug.

If he doesn't vote Democrat, he'll just stay home.

1. wow
I too am sick of the "they're just as bad" thing - I asked someone to explain how they are "just as bad" and he couldn't!

Finally, he said that - as one example - Kerry should have known Bush is a liar, and not believed him with the push for the Iraq invasion, and voted against it. Since he did not vote against it, he was equally as bad.

I could not believe my ears! I pointed out a long list of Bush's "mistakes" (lies, bad policies, etc) and compared it to Kerry's record (good and bad), but true to form, he could not admit that he was wrong. I just don't get it.

2. Excellent! You're correct that the canard "well, Democrats are just as
bad" will tell you several things:

1) the speaker of such nonsense is just plain ol' OUT OF IDEAS, has no facts, and no legitimate comeback.
2) the speaker of such nonsense isn't paying attention to much of anything - except the propaganda bullshit spewed on the Pox "news" channel and the limbots of the world. All that's left is parrotting, because the speaker of such nonsense has nothing original to add of his/her own.
3) perhaps it's true that the speaker of such nonsense has been paying attention lately, but the reality now setting in is just a wee bit too painful to accept or acknowledge. NOBODY wants to admit he/she has been had, lied to, fooled, suckered. NOBODY wants to admit he/she has hitched his/her wagon to an anvil. They have their pride, you know. And for too many of them, I think pride trumps all - they HAVE TO BE "right." Which lets them crow and gives them bragging rights, and the added perk of lording it over you for your being "wrong." Facing that you're forcibly being stripped of all this delusion is painful, and not everybody's man enough/woman enough to own up to that. You may have somebody just steeped in denial. But this individual could still be motivated, even in that denial, to stay home on Election Day, just out of sheer dejection and embarrassment.
