Chilly reception for Bush in first speech to NAACP
Entreaties met with more sighs than cheers after years of declining group's invitations

WASHINGTON - Recalling a Houston teacher's complaint that his ninth-grade students couldn't read, President Bush acknowledged fractures between blacks and the Republican Party as he told the NAACP on Thursday that he and the association should work together to improve education.
Bush spoke to the NAACP annual convention for the first time as president after declining five consecutive invitations from the civil rights group.

The president was greeted with polite, reserved applause. But his 35-minute talk drew audible sighs and long stretches of silent disagreement and head-shaking from the audience of thousands packed into the Washington Convention Center.

The crowd reacted enthusiastically twice — when Bush promised to sign the extension of key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and said that "many African-Americans distrust my political party."

7. They showed the audience last night on c-span
They were yawning and mumbling to each other and there were a lot of empty seats,. He thinks that when he goes before a black audience he has to name all of the problems he believes are associated with the black community. The black community know what the problems are and they know how they occurred and who contributed to them or made them worse. Does he go any gatherings of other races and talks about social problems, such as crystal meth, divorce rates, teen pregnancy, spousal abuse, pedophila,etc...
