Believe it -- GOP going after Social Security next year

Don't believe Social Security phase-out is coming down the pike again next year?

This from a press release just out from from Finance Committee ranking member, Sen. Max Baucus ...

U.S. Senator Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, today blasted the President’s renewal of a plan to privatize Social Security and slash benefits for millions of Americans. The Mid-Session Budget Review released by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) today included a proposal that would spend $721 billion – nearly $10 billion more than originally planned in the President’s original Fiscal Year 2007 budget – to turn Social Security into a system of private accounts with lower guaranteed benefits to Americans. The President’s proposal to privatize Social Security includes significant cuts in guaranteed benefits for the vast majority of Social Security recipients through the indexing of initial benefits to prices, rather than wages.

19. It is more than W, pukes have been after Social Security for years.
See quote from Eisenhower:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

33. In the 1930's General Smedly Butler put them in their place.
They need the same treatment again with the current generation. I suspect the puke light Eisenhower also stomped on them or more likely refused to listen.

24. Actually, more like - never. Norquist mantra on shrinking the government
until it can be drowned in a bathtub. They need our social security money to bail out their Enrons and Abramoffs. And, yeah, FDR is now the enemy to be conquered.
Once that's done, they'll tackle Lincoln.

28. Great turn of phrase, "rasputinous threats."
In other words, every time we think they're dead, they show more signs of life.

Simply roll back or lift the salary cap if SS needs more money!

7. This time around they will
probably try to slip the destruction of Social Security in, in the most deceptive and concealed way possible, since B*sh's taxpayer-financed barnstorming tour was a complete failure.

they are all over the television talking about cutting entitlement programs. The first entitlement programs to go are the tax cuts and corporate welfare but they can't seem to see that.

In order to prop up the stock market. With all that new money flowing in they will then be able to liquidate there assets without crashing the market.

10. We totally misinterpret the "problem" from the Repug perspective
The problem isn't that the system isn't solvent, the problem is that the system is solvent if one assumes that the government will honor it's debts. The party of personal responsibility has no intention of repaying their obligations to those to whom they owe money - US workers.

17. Ahh! That explains the "deficit reduction" hoopla.
So people can start thinking we are heading back to where we will be able to fund SS.
Instead, it will be a big surprise to be opened a few years from now.
Look! We cannot afford SS! Surprise surprise.
Oh. And, they'll blame Democrats.

Supposedly the tax cuts are bringing money into Uncle Sam's pockets hand over fist. Now they say they are too poor to honor commitments to seniors.

Social Security isn't safe as long as republicans control Congress. This is a great election year issue to use against the Republicans.

29. It didn't go over well when Bush started pushing it before.

But these guys are cunning. I could see them launching a massive lying propaganda campaign and a stealth attack of some sort.

It is reassuring that people didn't want * fooling with their social security.

Just goes to show that most people don't care about issues until it directly bites them in the ass.

if they have the votes. They will not pass up the opportuntiy to destroy SS if given the chance, no matter if they sacrifice the House and Senate afterwards. They are salivating.
