Mehlman supports VRA though GOP congress doesn't. Dean attacks.
Dean and Mehlman both spoke at the NALEO conference in Dallas. Mehlman says they support all voting rights strongly, even as the GOP dominated congress fails to renew the VRA.

The president has correctly called the Voting Rights Act one of the crown jewels of our civil rights laws," Mr. Mehlman told more than 400 delegates gathered for lunch. He pledged that GOP House and Senate leaders want to work through the differences and "reauthorize and strictly enforce the Voting Rights Act so critical to our nation."

Dr. Dean, who spoke later at the same luncheon, criticized Republican lawmakers for stalling the proposed 25-year renewal of the Voting Rights Act.

"Twenty-four hours ago, Republicans pulled the Voting Rights Act off of the table," Dr. Dean said. "How can you come before a group and ask for their votes, when you don't want them to vote?"

At a later news conference, Dr. Dean was critical of Republican leadership, including Mr. Mehlman.

"It's wrong for Republicans to think they're going to get Hispanic votes by claiming they can't control they're (their) own Congress," he said."

I corrected the Dallas Morning News reporter on his spelling of the word "their".

Haven't seen this issue in the news much. The media is too busy outing homegrown terrorists.

1. Some good lines by Dean
Republicans can't control their own Congress! That's pretty good.

But, we know how independent-minded those Republicans can be! :sarcasm:

2. Anytime a Democratic spokesperson attacks I nominate
Well said Dean, go for the throat.
I hope hispanics know who will be next on disenfranchised with voting rights.

3. How dare Mehlman go before a Latino group supporting the VRA
when his own party just crushed it. To stand and say he and the president support voting rights when this just happened is so unreal.

5. Amen. I have not seen the media covering Mehlman's pandering
and showing his saying that the party stands for voting rights when they just tabled voting rights.

Good for Dean for speaking out on it. There is just no coverage of it.
