New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. apologizes to graduates

Graduates get an apology

By Paul Kirby , Freeman staff

NEW PALTZ - New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. told about 900 SUNY New Paltz graduates Sunday that he was sorry.

It wasn't an apology for anything Sulzberger, who first joined the Times in 1978 as a Washington correspondent, specifically did. It was, for the most part, offered as an apology from a member of a generation that had vowed to beat back world ills, such as the Vietnam War and government corruption, and never let them happen again.

"I will start with an apology," Sulzberger told the graduates, who wore black gowns and hats with yellow tassels. "When I graduated in 1974, my fellow students and I ended the Vietnam War and ousted President Nixon. OK. OK. That's not quite true. Maybe there were larger forces at play.

"Either way, we entered the real world committed to making it a better, safer, cleaner, more equal place," Sulzberger added. "We were determined not to repeat the mistakes of our predecessors. We had seen the horror and futility of war and smelled the stench of government corruption. Our children, we vowed, would never know that. So, well, I am sorry."

Sulzberger's comments drew cheers from the graduates as well as some of the 4,000 or so family members and friends who sat inside a fenced-in area on the Old Main quadrangle. A few thousand more stood or sat in lawn chairs around the main setting.

1. Walk the Walk, Arthur, don't just talk the talk...
If you mean this, you would FIRE liars like Nagourney and his fellow PRE$$TITUTE$ and you would hire real reporters like Hersh who have guts!

2. Get specific - talk about how your paper helped destroy HONEST REPORTERS
Edited on Mon May-22-06 12:56 PM by blm
like Gary Webb by helping Poppy Bush, and then the Clinton administration cover up their lies about CIA drugrunning and arms dealing.

Covering up for them was really great for New York and this nation, wasn't it? How did you all like that 9-11 event and the Iraq war? Thank the newspapers who covered up for BushInc all these decades.

4. ESPECIALLY Gary Webb
How the LIARS at the New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles TImes ALL conspired to destroy Webb and drive him to suicide. They ALL let Dope Pusher Oliver North off the hook!

5. a tapeworm is sorry
since olden days, deep in the gut of a healthy society, tapeworms squirmed but never really went anyplace as the blood and the grit and the spirit of a healthy living being was always watching out, ready to nip the filthy lil bastard's heads off if they dared emerge from the gristle where they spent their short nasty brutish lives - but about 40 years ago, the tapeworms snuck outta their lair while singing amerka the booful, and killed a sitting president in broad daylight, and it's been prosperity for tapeworms ever since! Somehow, they infested the entire body, while blaming all the ills on the red white and blue blood cells! blah blah blah

11. Life is pretty good in Illinois
we have a live chance to take Henry Hyde's seat, and the GOP is pretty much dead here, except for the whitest of suburbs. That also means that Smirk and Dick don't come around much.

Where are you again?

10. One thing I HAVEN'T noticed from some of these pot-shooters
is apologies. MoDo has been firing on Smirk for awhile, but hasn't apologized for smearing Gore in 2000. They had to know what a feeble, malignant loser Smirk was during the campaign. yet they continued to whore for him anyway. How do they sleep at night?

13. She was every bit as nasty to Kerry
even making up a quote that hurt him. "Who among us is not a NASCAR fan?" When Kerry doesn't speak like that, actually has gone to NH NASCAR events for years, and never pretended to be anything he wasn't. (Oddly, the same lie they pinned on Gore.)

14. Mr Sulzberger Owes us all a More Personal Apology, for NOT REPORTING NEWS!
If Mr Sulzberger had allowed his paper to REPORT THE NEWS,
even when it is damaging to the Bush** regime,
that regime would no longer be in power.

16. Hypocrisy, chutzpah, dissimulation and lies.
The friggin' NY Times admitted cooperating (collaborating) with the Bush regime by witholding from the public the news of the NSA's eavesdropping on the public. In their coverage of WMD, Sulzberger allowed "reporters" like Judith Miller free rein to wreak havoc inside and outside the Times Building. I live in NYC. The Times was my local paper for my entire life, as it was for my parents and grandparents. I cancelled my subscription in total disgust this year. Sulzberger can take his crocodile tears and shove them.
