Alternative to Verizon, Bell South, AT&T

A wireless and long distance company that donates a portion of their charges to progressive organizations working for peace, human rights, economic justice, education, and the environment.

1. Couple little problems with that.
One, they only do long-distance. For local calling, you're still stuck with your local incumbant, which is basically a monopoly. If you're in a Verizon, BellSouth, or AT&T area, you're basically screwed. Also WALD charges significantly more, and there's no telling how much of the money actually goes to good causes. My advice, dump your landline phone and go with either a cell phone from Sprint/T-Mobile, or get a VoIP phone.

3. Well, Working Assets also has cell phone service
We have both our long distance and cell phone with them. We also got our Visa card with them. Since they send money to great progressive organizations, it's worth it. However, you are correct in that getting long distance with them doesn't help dump Bellsouth (which is what we have).

Working Assets' cell phone service uses the Sprint network, FWIW.

5. The are likely leasing facilites from ATT, Verizon, Qwest and
other large telecommunications companies. Cellular is wireless which means it is radio communications which is totally unsecured. Your conversation is out in the air for anyone to capture. The NSA has the technology to track, record every celular conversation including calling and called parties.

6. They lease from Sprint

Their statement on that relationship:

http://www.workingforchange.com/webgraphics/nsa.html Statement in general about their beliefs, with links to other information.

FWIW, Bellsouth has posted NOTHING about what they did, and Working Assets has.

EDITED to fix Spring to Sprint (been a long week)
