I Don't Trust Carl Bernstein's Call For An Investigation......
if I heard correctly - he is calling on the Repugs to investigate *Co before the November elections. If that happens and they sweep the dirt under the rug and say that * was justified with everything he's done up to now - the Repugs will say he is exonerated and will use that to win in November.

Also - if the Repugs have an investigation now and they lose the house and/or the senate - does that eliminate the chance for the Dems calling for an investigation should they win in November?

1. his argument is sound
and that is if the Dems take up impeachment after the election (upon winning back the House), it will be construed as a partisan witch-hunt reminiscent of the jihad against Clinton in the 1990s. He said this was an opportunity for Republicans to separate themselves from the sinking ship - Bush - before the election which may seem an attractive option.

However, I agree with you that there is no way in hell the Republicans have the integrity nor the good sense to cut loose from this turd presidency.

And the silver lining is that they will pay for it at the polls.

2. I like Bernstein and have followed him with respect since Watergate.
I think his instincts here are pretty good.

He's definitely the more progressive of the Woodward/Bernstein team from Watergate coverage days.

3. Like with everything else...
...we're screwed if the media doesn't do its job.

If there were a whitewash investigation, the media would have to hold their feet to the fire, or else it will be a sham.

The only hope is that the media (Fox notwithstanding), can smell the blood in the water and will decide there are more ratings points in letting Bush have it than in singing "God Bless Republican America" 24/7.

The biggest risk is that they're peeing in their pants at the opportunity to show off new theme music and logos for Operation End Times in Iran, because that shit sells.

4. Bernstein's idea was to have a real investigation..........
....not just to go through the motions (which, I believe, is what you're suggesting).

If they did that, it would accomplish nothing and in fact would probably make the morally reprehensible Republicans look even worse than they do now by drawing attention to their mock trial.

5. If He Is Calling For A Real Investigation Then He Should Call For......
an independent investigator and not a panel of Repugs. Berstein is saying the Repugs should investigate.

Come on now - can we trust them to do a REAL investigation?

8. I agree, an independent investigation would be a good thing........
....but Bernstein's idea ia that if Republicans do an investigation first, they would be able to redeem themselves before the election instead of waiting until the Democrats do it.

6. That would be true...
... so long as the media doesn't pronounce a whitewashed report as proof positive that there was no case.

And given what we've seen since they started getting their jollies by cutting Mike Dukakis off at the knees, why should we expect any different.

That said, I'm proud of Bernstein for bringing this discussion into the national dialogue.

7. The Repugs dont have the balls. Plus "Impeachment fear" is being used
by them as a campaign tool against the Democrats. If the GOP starts its own investigation, then how can they scare the base with images of Democrats starting investigations?

It wont happen.
