Washington - The Republican National Committee says it will begin airing an ad on talk radio shows in Milwaukee and Madison this week criticizing Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold for his proposal to censure President Bush.

The ad describes Feingold as the "leader" of a group of Democrats "working against" the president's efforts to "secure our country" by monitoring terrorist communications and disrupting terrorist plots.

"Call Russ Feingold and ask him why he's more interested in censuring the president than protecting our freedom," says the ad, according to a transcript and audio provided by the committee.

Feingold issued a statement late Monday that says in part:

"The President has broken the law, and the censure resolution I introduced is intended to hold him accountable. Nobody says that we shouldn't be monitoring suspected terrorists. Of course we should, and we can under current law. We have yet to hear a reasonable argument from the president or anyone else why it was necessary to break the law.".....

9. here are some poll results about the censure issue.
While Democratic lawmakers have shied away from censure, many Democratic voters support it, according to the first batch of polls on the issue.

In a nationwide Newsweek Poll of registered voters conducted March 16 and 17, 42% supported censure and 50% opposed it. Among Democrats, 60% supported censure and 30% opposed.

The poll also asked voters whether they believed that Democrats who supported censure were doing so more for "partisan political advantage" or more because they think it's the right thing to do.

Of all those surveyed, 53% said it was for partisan reasons and 33% said it was because those politicians believed it is the right thing to do. Among Democratic voters, 33% said it was for partisan reasons, and 51% said it was because those politicians thought it was the right thing to do.

11. I heard the ad this morning
It was either on AAR Sam's show or on Hartmann. I laughed.

Maybe it's just my mood today. But I can't imagine the people of Wisconsin feeling like their Senator is working to make them less safe. The R's are grabbing at straws or have very little talent left at this point. Subtley is most important to get people to bite at this sort of idea. This ad hits people over the head with a giant salami. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Subject: GOP to Air Ads Attacking Feingold

From: Russ Feingold, U.S. Senator <[email protected] >
To: Dar Weyenberg <[email protected] >

Dear xxxx,

The President broke the law and he must be held accountable.

Thanks to you, and tens of thousands of others around the country, the President and his administration now realize that they're not going to get away with it any longer. A news report out this morning says that the Republican National Committee will run radio ads in my home state of Wisconsin, filled with the same scare tactics that they tried to use on me during my last election.

It didn't work then, and it won't work now.

To read the ad click here

Contrary to the spin from the President we heard once again today, this issue is not about whether the government should be wiretapping terrorists - of course it should, and it can under current law. The President simply refuses to follow that law.

And to show that progressives won't back down and that we'll stand up for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the rights and freedoms on which our country was founded, I'm asking for your help today.

According to the news report, these attack ads will begin airing this week on both Milwaukee and Madison radio stations. We must show the President and others that we will not be intimidated. So today I ask you to contribute $250, $150, $50 or whatever you can afford to the Progressive Patriots Fund as a show of support to help me raise the funds needed to help elect more progressive candidates across the country who won't back down to this Administration or the Washington nay-sayers.

As Democrats, we must prove that we won't back down from a fight. We must stand up and stand together, and with one voice demand accountability from a President who has broken the law.

I'll never back down and I know you won't either.

Thanks again for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold

Russ Feingold
United States Senator
Honorary Chair, Progressive Patriots Fund

p.s. To help us send a message that we won't back down, please go to our website and sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of my resolution to censure the President.

13. How stupid can they be!!!
They are gonna let the Democrats off the hook. Right now the story is about the process, why Feingold didn't get support first etc...there hasn't been alot of discussion about the merits of Censure. Now, the Republicans are going to switch the debate to censure itself, a proposal that at least has significant support, and perhaps majority support.

They really do have their heads up their asses!!!

15. "Protecting our freedom" ???
Is that why they're illegally wiretapping US citizens?

They have to take away a freedom to protect it?

Oh my Gawd my head is spinning!

17. If the GOP goes wide with this, other Dems need to call out GOPs strawman
tactic and fight it in a unified way.
