Tancredo, Illinois rep trade racism accusations

By M.E. Sprengelmeyer, Rocky Mountain News
March 17, 2006

WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo and an Illinois congressman traded charges of racism during a heated confrontation following a televised appearance on immigration reform, their congressional offices confirmed Thursday.

Tancredo, R-Colo., is a leading advocate of tougher enforcement of laws affecting illegal immigrants and those who hire them.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., the son of Puerto Rican parents, calls Tancredo's approach an "ugly policy" motivated by racism.

Gutierrez, who has a cast on a foot, reportedly walked toward an elevator, but Tancredo tried to stop him by putting his hand on his shoulder. Gutierrez reportedly demanded: "Get your hand off me!"

Adams said Tancredo had done little more than tap him on the shoulder.

Gutierrez said to Tancredo: "You racist! You bigot!"

Tancredo told Gutierrez: "You look in the mirror if you want to see a racist."

1. Now that's what I like to hear
Someone finally called Tancredo what he really is. Illegal Immigration is a problem that needs fixing, but there is no need to be racist about it.

4. Tancredo probably has the "white man as victim" mentality
that's what i get from this statement "You look in the mirror if you want to see a racist."

i could understand if he responded with anything else such as defending himself as not being racist or telling the guy to calm down or whatever.

but "look in the mirror if you want to see a racist" to Gutierrez sounds like Tancredo thinks he is a victim. he probably views latino=illegal.

7. it has nothing to do with "balls" or anything like that
his constituency has the same views as him. he isn't challenging anything. he is openly a bigot like Fred Phelps.

14. I really don't get this
It's one thing to say it about a group made up of men *and* women. I can see why that's offensive, as in something like "the ACLU has balls to take Rush Limbaugh's side". However, if I say something like "John Elway's got brass ones for taking hits like that all those years", I think saying it about a man is not suggesting that only men have courage. It's just saying that the man in question does.

16. I thought it was the "rubber and glue" gambit
"I'm rubber and you're glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you."

But it's been a while since I had the eight-year-old mentality that Tancredo seems to have mastered from decades of experience, so I could be wrong.
