Less than EIGHT MONTHS until the election... How are YOU helping Dems win?
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 04:16 PM by ih8thegop
So here we are, 244 days from the 2006 election. Mr. Unpopularity Bush and his Wrong Wing cronies are screwing up almost everything they touch: Iraq, the Katrina recovery, the port deal... Not to mention indictment after indictment after indictment.

On November 8 - the day after the election - I'd like to see the Wrong Wing descending into udder chaos because of this. But while Ney, Delay, Duke, Libby, et al. have done their part to kill their party's credibility, we also have a very important role to play as Democrats and as Americans.

Be it advocating election reform, writing letters to the editor, registering voters, signing nominating petitions, contributing money, pushing for initiatives (i.e. to raise the minimum wage), telling others about the importance of the election, contributing money to the campaigns, etc., we all need to do something to help sane people win this fall.

"But, ih8thegop, the Democratic Party isn’t deserving of my support because..." If I had $1 for every time I personally felt that way... But, let's be honest: the Democratic Party is not perfect, and neither are you or me. We need to ignore trivial complaints

"But, ih8thegop, it won't work because..." One reason you might think that way is because YOU'RE NOT LETTING IT WORK!! You're either part of the solution or part of the problem. Which will it be? I've chosen the first option.

It's up to us to save our country. So what have YOU been doing for the sake of Democrats and the USA?

I have written a couple letters to the editors of a couple newspapers and have signed and circulated petitions to nominate Granholm and Stabenow for re-election and get an initiative on the ballot to raise the minimum wage in Michigan. In a few weeks I hope to donate to Granholm's campaign or perhaps to the Michigan Democratic Party.

So what are you doing?

1. I think a constructive thing would be for small county groups
all over the country try to establish some sort of "watchdog" group for each County, to try to at least curtail some of the crooked stuff that goes on election day. Without legal authority I don't know exactly what could be done. Anyone with some knowledge about this please offer suggestions.

18. I am!
I have not been this involved for a long time (was very involved when I was in my twenties).

I plan on bringing my 15 year old son to the senate district convention, so he can see how the process works.

19. I'm not.
I'm not helping them lose, either.

I'm currently trying to find out if there are any local candidates to support that are not republican. If I can find them, I'll support them. So far the only one I've found is my local state senator, who just left the republicans and became an independent. He's running against the democratic governor.

I haven't seen a democratic, or other, challenger step forward to challenge my republican congressman, Greg Walden. Should someone appear, I'll help.

I haven't decided who to support in the governor's race. While there is a primary fast approaching, I've received zero information from the state or local democratic party about who will be running, other than a few brief newspaper mentions. I've googled to no avail. My incompletely informed impression is that the current democratic governor is unpopular with many democrats. Whether nominating a more progressive democrat would throw the governor's office to the republicans or not, I can't say.

So far, my efforts have focused on simply finding someone running I can actually cast a vote for to support.

21. I'm doing a few things
I've been volunteering for a while with a legislative race. In the primary we got forced into a runoff, so that's four more weeks of blockwalking.

I went to my precinct convention and will be going to county in a few weeks---then hopefully on to state.

For the last year I've been one of the organizers of a monthly meeting where we bring progressives together to socialize and hear speakers.

33. Yes, in Texas
This should be a pretty interesting convention. Two years ago I was there as one of many newbies who'd been brought into politics by the Dean and Clark and Kucinich campaigns. I can't say that we really got much done, but then the big competition at the convention was choosing the national delegates to go to Boston. This year we're picking a new party chair and hopefully move on clearing away more of the deadwood in the party.
