How in the hell do Dems ever lose in Colorado?
Dems pick up about 100,000 votes in Denver! Where is the GOP making up for this in CO?

18. Colorado Springs is Headquarters for James Dobson Family Focus Isn't It?
Also, isn't Colorado Springs the community headquarters for MIC?

19. Do you remember Stephen King's novel "The Stand"?
Do you remember Stephen King's novel "The Stand"?
Where all the devil's minions gathered in Las Vegas?

Well, King got it wrong. If Captain Trips makes the
scene, all the devil's minions will gather in Colorado
Springs. Hell, half of their leaders are already there,
and it's a lot shorter a ride up I-25 when the time
comes to nuke Boulder.

Seriously: Sometime, check out the extensive list
of Reich Wing Nutjob Religios Fanatic organizations
that are headquartered in the Springs, starting with
Jim Dobson and his group "Focus on the Family".

6. The Boulder AAR station covers all the way down to Colorado Springs.
And all the way up into Laramie and Casper. We're workin' on it!

20. Good job.
Here in Chicago, our AAR station goes off the air at sundown, and that frequency is then taken over by a hate radio outlet that comes all the way from Denver. How sad that the truth only reaches from Denver to Laramie and CO Springs, and the BushLies travel for 1000 miles.

24. Is it 850 KOA?
They didn't used to be so bad. Now I guess they kinda are. I know they have Limbaugh on their station.

I grew up with my parents listening to them back in the day. I can do a pretty good impression of their bumper announcement.

26. That's the one
Our AAR is on 850. Then at night whatever evening hate radio host ison comes blaring through. I never even listen long enough to hear who it is, but they're all the same anyway.

5. They make up for it in lots of places
Notably, my hometown of Colorado Springs/ El Paso County, home of Dobson, Haggard and a plethora of their bosom buddies. In addition, we have a great number of military retirees and defense contractors. Dems are outnumbered in registration 2-1 in El Paso and there hasn't been a Democratic county comissioner since the 70's.

Elsewhere, we have Tom Tancredo's 6th district, which covers the southern and western burbs of Denver, and Marylin Musgrave's 4th CD, which covers the eastern plains. Both of those places are also quite conservative, although not to the extent of El Paso County.

Don't get upset though, we're getting more purple all the time. I forsee a lot of good news coming out of our state this year.

9. I forsee good things too. My Mom is still there and this is what she says
This is a farm town of about 2000. Very conservative and they vote republican, although there's a strong Libertarian factor.

After the 2004 election, she had to suffer the "I told you so" comments.

By Summer 2005, she would make a comment and one or two might challenge her.

By Christmas 2005, she would make a comment and be met with silence.

Now, she gets quiet little nods of agreement, although not many are being vocal about it.

I haven't checked in with her since the whole Port deal went down... perhaps I'll give her a call today.

12. I have family in the Springs, and they say it's going better too.
They are activists and very in to the local and state political moves. But Dobson is poison to anyone other than his groupies. He will do himself in when they find more people to hate than they can fill the pews with. Remember, Alito sent him that "thank you" note....uh huh.

13. Dobson has a lot of groupies though
I will agree that things are getting better. I was plesantly surprised by the amount of Salazar signs I saw around town during the election. Hopefully things are moving in the right direction, but when all the county comissioners campaign on is who is more conservative, I'm not too impressed.

30. There is a ton of money here
in Pitkin County. Lots of jetsetters and corporate honchos BUT, they don't want the natural beauty of this place destroyed either. There is already a big divide here about how much development is acceptable. It's kind of like ("I got mine so who cares what you want"). The environment is big on the agenda here as it should be. Bush's plan to sell land in NF is also a big concern. You also have many employees who work in the resorts (ie: Aspen, Snowmass, Vail)who have been priced out of the market and have to go down valley to find a place to live. Aspen and the SkiCo have done a poor job of getting affordable housing for the people who serve and cater to the bigwigs.

29. You won't find a majority
of repulicans or conservatives in Pitkin or Eagle Counties (ie: Aspen, Vail, Roaring Fork Valley). These counties typically go for a democrat or even a green party. Your conservative block is on the plains and south of Denver.

16. IMO...it's about personal privacy...
In the west more than in most places in the U.S. people rebel against government intrusion in their lives. Up to now that ire has been directed at the Democratic Party, who has always been seen as the party of big government.

I think this is changing now with the Republican's unprecedented attempts to regulate people's personal lives...abortion, the Terri Schiavo incident, attempts to regulate personal behavior by amending the constitution I think are making things swing our way. A campaign theme stressing the right to privacy, and perhaps support of an emendment guaranteeing the right to privacy could switch the west our way for a long time!!!

21. What about combing through your library records?
Are they more of the "what the hell are they doing checking on me?" group, or the "I have nothing to hide so go ahead and put cameras in my bedroom" group? I read that Utah is glad * is spying on people. I suppose they'll be happy when Hillary is president too :eyes:

22. There are always exceptions...
But I think you will be seeing a swing to the blue in Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and even Wyoming a bit in future elections. We are seeing it already IMO.

27. The best source of info for this sort of thing...
That I know of, anyway, is:

www.uselectionatlas.org

If you want to know any obscure statistical figure relating to how many votes a candidate got in a given county in a given year then this is the place to go.
