Swann favors ban on abortion

GOP gubernatorial hopeful also backs marriage amendment.
By John L. Micek
Call Harrisburg Bureau

HARRISBURG | Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann said in a televised interview Sunday that he would sign legislation banning abortion in the state if the U.S. Supreme Court ever voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Snip...

He also said he'd oppose a bill raising Pennsylvania's minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.15 an hour by 2007 because he feared it would make the state less competitive with its neighbors.

Swann, who began his voting life as a Democrat, also called on black and minority voters who traditionally vote Democrat to be ''more open about the party of choice.''

''Minorities give their vote to the Democratic Party, and the Democratic Party has given them lip service in terms of being involved in the party and in being major players,'' Swann said, pointing to such high-profile Bush administration officials as Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Labor Secretary Elaine Chao as evidence of the GOP's commitment to diversity.

The man is the antithesis of a Democrat, but says he was Democrat and all he got was lip service. The man is delusional.

....I supported all of MY life, but even most of MY favorite players turned RED when they got rich. And I wouldn't vote for them in a one candidate race with a gun to my head.

You know, the one where you spend a year in speech therapy to sound less, um, black, except you come off like Richard Pryor (RIP) making fun of white people in his standup act.

6. You noticed that too?....
He seemed stunned by some of the questions. When GS informed him if Roe-Wade was overturned, the issue would revert back to the State laws. He was dumbfounded.

He tried to weasel out of taking a position on stem cell research but his ignorance was blatant.

He showed as much intelligence during the interview as that football in the background. What an ass!

9. Pathetic interview
I listened and could not believe that the race is a dead heat. He was just clueless. At one point saying George Bush wasn't experience in politics, was an oil man - that is a good example of putting in people that have no experience? What a campaign, claims he has no experience, doesn't know anything about stem cell research, probably wants to make a state law against abortion, wants to keep the minimum wage low -- can't image people there would go out to vote for this. The guy makes no sense when he talks - this should not be a dead heat.

11. So, opposing a boost in the minimum wage benefits who, exactly?
If Swann thinks all that minorities get out of the Democratic Party is lip service, what in the world does he think they get from the GOP? I mean, besides the back of a hand? Swann's just another house nigger on the Republican plantation. No voice, no power, no ideas; just a nicer room closer to massah's house is all it takes to keep Swannie happy.

12. watch his ABC This Week Interview
Rendell only needs to take clips from this interview and creat his spots. That's all he needs to do. PA needs to see how Swann is completely unprepared and empty. On more than one occasion, Swann stated - STATED that he didn't have a stance on the issue. He's a disaster.

14. Sadly, he's beating the drum of tired old repuke slogans...
that will be his end.

The temperament in this nation is turning, if if this boob thinks he can still get mileage out of those old repuke talking points, I think he's seriously deluded.

I think the audiences response at the Coretta Scott King funeral towards the Democrats, is a good indication of how out of touch the repuke party is on every single issue concerning the African-Americans in this nation.

Mr. Swann has received one to many concussions.

17. GOP/media considers Swann and Steele "a strong field" of contenders

Republican and Black

The party offers a strong field of statewide contenders
By Dan Gilgoff
2/27/06

He still has to survive the primary, but Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Keith Butler says a victory in November could spark a political revolution. A megachurch pastor and former Detroit councilman, Butler is one of four African-American Republicans with a shot at winning a Senate or gubernatorial race this year, the strongest such field in decades. And a win by even one or two, Butler says, could break the Democrats' near monopoly on black voters, remaking the American political landscape. "General Powell and Condi Rice are great, but if you really want to speak to African-Americans, you have to elect them as governors and senators," Butler says. "Until you are validated by an election, you're not considered a full leader."

None of the four candidates is a shoo-in. Butler and Ohio gubernatorial hopeful Ken Blackwell must win tough primaries. In Maryland, U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele faces an overwhelmingly Democratic electorate. And in Pennsylvania, former football star Lynn Swann must prove he is qualified to be governor despite no experience in public office. Still, just fielding so many competitive candidates represents a Republican revolution. Now, those candidates will be closely watched to see if any can defy what has long been a political reality: Black GOP candidates don't translate into more black GOP votes.

Tenacious. The crop of black candidates is the result of party recruiting and persistence by figures like Butler and Blackwell, both active in the GOP since being inspired by Ronald Reagan. "Friends used to say, 'They don't like you; why waste your time?'" says Steele, now Maryland lieutenant governor. "I said, 'I could either leave the party or try to change it.'"

Since becoming Republican National Committee chairman last year, Ken Mehlman says he has supplemented an "outreach" model of showing up in black communities before Election Day with an "inclusion" model that continually solicits advice from black leaders. He has convened an African-American advisory board that includes virtually all of 2006's black statewide candidates, even low-profile contenders like Vermont's state auditor. This spring, the RNC will sponsor its first training school for minority candidates. Says Mehlman: "It's both a landmark year and part of a building process."

20. I saw a country republican meeting ...
with swann and the other two repug candidates in January, both of who are INFINITELY more qualified and competent to be governor ... Both expressed a lot of frustration that Swann would not debate them, Swann was pretty cocky and arroganet, and said he had no reason to debate them ... It wasn't official yet, but you could tell he knew he was going to get the state endorsement ...

I saw during that dinner what the repugs like about ... He is the SPITTING image of W, except black ... Good looking, swarmy charm and clueless ...

The poll that had Swann even with Rendell is Rasmussen, so take it for what it is worth ... Rs in the state hate Rendell with a PASSION, cause of that envy thing ... It will be a battle, but as noted, anyone but a card carrying repug with a brain who hears Swann speak will see this thing for what it is ... Of the last 36 elections in the state, Swann has managed to vote in 16 ... Makes Santorum look legit ...

30. SWANN WILL NOT WIN.
PA. will NOT elect a Republican---ANY Republican---over Ed Rendell! Rendell IS THE Super-star! I've been in his presence several times, even walking in a parade a bit with him. He is larger than life. I'm telling you, this is a non-story. Seriously.
In addition, Santorum is history.
Specter is accepted because, well, I'm not sure; probably because he knows how to at least sound reasonable.

34. I SURE Hope You're Correct...
What a turn-coat, Swann. Not that I think he should be a Democrat because of his race, but I NEVER thought he was THAT STUPID!!

If he really wants to win, seems he could see SOME of the "bad" news regarding the Repukes! Strange that he would change now! I wonder what his reasoning is???

And I agree, after reaping ALL THAT MONEY from his career, he wants to keep the minimum wage at $5.15!

Hey, I'm no football fan and couldn't give a fig about it... it's pretty much been "corporatized" since I once DID watch it. Anymore, well fegeddabouid!

I used to be a fanny of Green Bay, but when I heard Farve was kicking for Bush it pretty much ended ANY interest I had in the game. Wonder if HE will decide to run???
