Bush: "I think you need to take (Condi) at her word, she's not running"
Bush Doesn't Think Rice Will Run

By TERENCE HUNT AP White House Correspondent

http://www.salon.com/wire/ap/archive.html?wire=D8FH9SHG0.html

February 02,2006 | WASHINGTON -- President Bush believes Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when she says she does not want to be president, and he says he does not know what role he will play in picking the GOP presidential nominee in 2008.

"I think you need to take her at her word that she's not running," Bush said in a conversation on Air Force One on Wednesday as he flew to Tennessee for a speech.

"Today I met with her, for example. When I sat down with her, I wasn't thinking politics, I was thinking about what will I do to continue to keep the pressure on Iran, so that they give up their nuclear ambitions," Bush said.

The president says he is more focused on this year's midterm elections. "To the extent that I am thinking politics, it is to retain the (Republican) leadership of the House and the Senate," he said.

BEN-VENISTE: Isn't it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6th PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States. Now, the ...

BEN-VENISTE: Thank you.

RICE: No, Mr. Ben-Veniste ...

BEN-VENISTE: I will get into the ...

RICE: I would like to finish my point here.

BEN-VENISTE: I didn't know there was a point.

10. Is Condi a resident of Texas? Pres and VP can't be from the same state
Of course, Cheney was from Texas, but he registered to vote in Montana so he could run. I'm just curious.

14. I read it, seems to me that this covers it.....
The Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves

If at least 1 of the candidates (pres & vice pres) can't be an inhyabitant of the same state as the electors, that means that the 2 have to be from different states. For example, this phrase would mean that Bush and Cheney being from the same state would be OK in every state except Texas. Sounds good to me, lets disqualify the Texas electors.

15. So the way it would have worked in 2004
is that the Texas electors could have voted for Bush, but not for Cheney were Cheney ruled to have been a Texan.

The Texas electors could have voted for Jeb instead.

Then there would be no vice-presidential candidate with more than half the votes. The senate would then choose the winner from among the top two vote-getters which in this case would have been Cheney anyway.

In 2000 it would be more interesting because I am unsure of the dates when things happened. Cheney and Lieberman would have the most electoral votes, but I'm not sure who controlled the senate during that time because it was right about that time when Jeffords switched parties. The funniest result would be if the senate was tied, (which I think it might have been), and then the vice-president, Al Gore would break the tie and choose Prsident Bush's Vice-president.

Wouldn't that have been something?

But in short, there is nothing constitutionally wrong with having the president and vice-president from the same state.

16. Interesting line of thought
I'm not sure, but I think that the electors only vote on the ticket, so they vote for Pres/Vice pres of the ticket. I only remember them reading the Presidential ballots, not the Vice Presidential ballots when they did the count. I always thought that challenging Cheney's residency in Montana might have been their best strategy in 2000. Of course, it is much too late now.
