Has anyone else received a phone call like this?
Edited on Sat Jan-28-06 09:36 PM by Lorien
the phone rang yesterday. I picked it up and a loud automated voice read my name, then a series of numbers which I can't correlate to anything (not a phone number, account number, card number etc.) then...silence. Very Odd.

5. Heh-there goes my odd form of dyslexia again
I often type words that sound similar to the ones I intend-but don't have a remotely similar meaning. Spell check never catches that, of course! x(

3. I've been getting those. I believe it is a telemarketing tool to...
ascertain what time(s) of day you are most likely to answer your phone.

Just a hunch.

13. Agree it's telemarketing, but....
I think its a crude ID system. I understand dozens of numbers (maybe more) are dialed at one time and a computers voice gets it going. A human only answers when there is a response from any one of the numbers called (even a grunt will summons human contact). I think the numbers are just an ID that que the operator to which individual number he's talking to.

Just a hunch.

14. Mothmen, creatures that live between life and death...
They warned of the bridge collapse in Point Pleasant Ohio about 20 years ago. Strange. A Washington Post writer wrote about his experiences with these things, these moth looking things that phoned people all around Point Pleasant making weird noises and shit. Supposedly it is a "true story" I dont know how true it is but the movie was creepy.

16. Very creepy!
I saw it, too. Wasn't sure what to make of it. Especially the sequences where the lead character experienced seeing his wife, or others only to find that they were dead when he saw them places other than where their bodies were found--hours after they were already dead.

:scared:

21. The aspect of the film I described
may have been a Hollywood embellishment to make the film even creepier (seeing the dead). Here's an account of the film and the events that inspired it that I just found:

10. I get automated calls, but nothing like that
Sometimes I answer and all I hear is beeps. I think those are designed to see when I'm home.

Really, it should be against the law for someone to have a machine call me. If they can't call in person, I don't want them calling at all. Come to think of it, I get a lot of calls I wish I didn't, even if they're 'in person'.

I have noticed a sharp dropoff of those types of calls since signing up (wish I still had the link)!

32. Yes, I am
But I still get some calls. For instance, I got one last week from a collection agency who is looking for a former friend of my daughter. They had called twice before, and I asked them not to call again. They were pretty slimy, saying it was a "private business matter" when I asked what the call was about. When I asked if they represented a collection agency they admitted it.

Here's the web site to get on the do not call list for any spectators who might not know how to do that.

17. Never gotten that...
I've gotten dead air when the autodialer didn't have a tele-marketer operator to connect me to, but never what you're describing. How many numbers was it?

Just a WAG, but it could be that the numbers were supposed to only be heard by the operator, along with your name, and were intended to tell the operator which spiel to use...

18. I think it was around seven numbers
One of those times I wish that I would have had caller ID, although the number still may have been unavailable.

With all this NSA nonsense it's hard not to be paranoid-but then again, I guess that's what they want.

24. There's a thought - just call the NSA and ask then who called you
they could probably even play you a recording of the message!

Seriously, it was probably a fly-by-night telemarketer with defective software - either that or tomorrow's lottery numbers...

31. From Lost
There's a bunker on an island, and there's a counter counting down from 108 minutes (the sum of the numbers) and someone has to enter those numbers into a computer and hit execute before the counter reaches zero, or there will be trouble.

29. No,
but I get phone calls every week (maybe three or four) that are automated in a foreign language. (Some sound Russian and others sound Arabic.) I realize that these are probably telemarketers, but it's makes me feel as though I'm on the receiving end of something clandestine.

30. I've gotten automated calls before.
Kinda different, but I recently received an RNC membership card, as if I'd contributed to them.

Of course I wrote them a great big check, then put it in the envelope, tore it, shredded it, burned it and threw it in the dumpster.
