One of the shortcomings of Republicans' aggressive drive to register voters to the GOP in central Orange County is that the bounty hunters getting paid per recruit in the $100,000-plus effort can get overzealous.
The drive has put the GOP ahead of Democrats in registration in the 1st Supervisorial District and closed the gap in that area's congressional, state Senate and Assembly districts. But not all of those new registrations are good ones.
Anaheim's Desiree Funsch, a Democrat and self-described liberal, couldn't believe her eyes when she received a Voter Notification Card indicating that she had re-registered as a Republican. She believes her name and address were taken from a petition she had signed for universal health care and filled into a voter-registration card. She has since corrected the problem with the county elections office.
Acting Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley said: "This is not uncommon when you have bounties. It's a small percentage, but it's been happening since long before I got here." Right now, he said, his office has about 50 suspect voter-registration cards and is preparing a packet to be investigated by the District Attorney's Office - the routine when this occurs. "We catch it, we stop it and we move forward," Kelley said.
