Reuters on Alito: one Democrat supports, half dozen undecided, rest oppose

Alito finds scant Democratic support

Wed Jan 18, 2006 6:02 PM ET
By Thomas Ferraro

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito had no apparent success on Wednesday in adding to his scant Democratic support in the Republican-led Senate, which is expected to soon confirm him.

So far, just one of the Senate's 44 Democrats -- moderate Ben Nelson of Nebraska -- has said he will vote for Alito. All but about a half dozen others appear certain to oppose him.

Regardless, the full Senate, which Republicans control with 55 of 100 seats, remained headed toward anticipated approval of President George W. Bush's conservative nominee within the next few weeks.

snip...

Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Bill Nelson of Florida said they remained undecided, and Max Baucus of Montana said he was inclined to oppose Alito. "I don't know if he is sufficiently mainstream," Baucus told reporters.

3. We just need forty one for a fillibuster. We CAN do this, if THEY will.
If not, the Democrats betray their constituents and they betray America.

5. My senator in Oregon, Wyden, is UNDECIDED????
I think he should know how West Oregon stands on this. Here is my letter to him:

I read today that you were undecided on how to vote for Samuel Alito for SCOTUS. I think it would be fairly obvious to you how your constituency stands on this issue. You are OBLIGATED as OUR REPRESENTATIVE to FOLLOW OUR WILL which is to protect OUR DEMOCRACY. This is your pledge. A confirmation or No vote on Alito is not our will. Ron you must Filibuster. History remembers your actions.

In addition we are tired of the political games. We need to see leadership from you in opposing the Bush Administration in all manner of unethical and illegal activities. The time has come for you to stand and fight.

By the way I don't understand the filibuster rules well. How many filibusters can we do a year?
