Seems like the upper class drank wine like crazy...but somewhere in the process, the wine and much of the food were contaminated with LEAD... This led to much probs like low birth rate and medical problems affecting the brain...hence Caligula, Nero, etc...

The used lead pipes to transport drinking water. Even in Roman colonies far from Rome, lead was used and archeologists have detected lead poisoning in the skeletal remains of ancient Roman colonists. Lead poisoning is most likely the leading cause of the insanity of the Roman emporers, like Caligula and Nero.

Bush's Admin is loosing the environmental regulations and allowing their donors to dump more pollution into our water ways and air. We're poisoning ourselves today, similar to what the Romans did.
