Democrats close ranks in opposition to Bush high court pick Alito
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democrats in Congress closed ranks in opposition to Samuel Alito, President George W. Bush's conservative Supreme Court nominee, who wrapped up two-and-a-half grueling days of testimony as part of his confirmation hearing.

Another leading Democrat, John Edwards, the party's vice presidential nominee in the 2004 elections, call Alito a conservative "ideologue" who would try to turn back the clock on years of hard-fought progress by liberals.

"His record, both on the bench and as an official in the Reagan and Bush administrations, showed that he is an ideologue who would put our fundamental rights at risk," Edwards said.

If you haven't seen John Edwards' petition for his reasons for us to oppose Borklito, here is the URL: http://ga3.org/campaign/opposealito

He's right on.

And can we stop Alito? I don't know. But it's better to get our voices in there than not. The Dems in general did not do a great service to us, but they can vote against Borklito's **s.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democrats in Congress closed ranks in opposition to Samuel Alito, President George W. Bush's conservative Supreme Court nominee, who wrapped up two-and-a-half grueling days of testimony as part of his confirmation hearing.

Detractors said that listening for some 18 hours to his explanations of his past views, his votes from the bench as an appeals court judge and other past actions, confirmed their view that Alito is a right-wing partisan intent on undoing decades of civil rights gains for women, minorities and the poor.

Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the US Senate, said Thursday it was especially disheartening that Alito had been tapped to replace Sandra Day O'Connor, the retiring justice known for her moderate views and her perennial role as the court's tie-breaking "swing vote."

"The right wing insisted that Justice O'Connor be replaced with a sure vote for their extreme agenda. Four days of hearings have shown that Judge Alito is no Sandra Day O'Connor," Reid said after the interrogation of Alito concluded Thursday.

Another leading Democrat, John Edwards, the party's vice presidential nominee in the 2004 elections, call Alito a conservative "ideologue" who would try to turn back the clock on years of hard-fought progress by liberals.
