Dear Senate Judiciary Dems,
I think the problem is that Democrats are basically fair, decent, and honest, and project these qualities onto other people. Would the Republicans be bending over backwards to seem collegial if they were grilling the left-wing equivalent of Alito, who would be as radical as a Weatherman, at least? Short-haired soft-spoken nerdy types with weepy wives seem far less dangerous than those long-haired hippies, but appearances can be deceiving. Anita Hill seemed like a fairly nice person to me, but Arlen Specter treated her like the devil's disciple.
When you know someone has a historical pattern of saying anything and everything to get a job, you have to study his record. And this record says filibuster. I've written a poem in the faint hope of inspiring you, and I'm hoping my fellow DUer's will recommend it, so that someone in the Senate Judiciary Committee will end up reading it and understand that your constituents, your base, your brethren, are hoping you'll find some balls (or in Diane Feinstein's case, I guess, some extra-strength estrogen).
"WHAT WOULD JIMMY STEWART DO?"
I think my brain will turn to custard If I watch one more day of this charade Mr. Alito lies, Mrs. Alito cries Either way, our democracy dies...
"I don't really think that Bork's a god I said it just to get the job," "And I joined an uncivil alumni group 'Cause I didn't wanna be a party poop."
"I thought CAP was short for Phi Beta Kappa." "Strip-searching is a way to build character." "Um, doesn't a woman's right to choose, Mean Manolo Blahnik or Ferragamo shoes?" "Unitary power? No, no, no. But once I'm a justice - Go man, go!"
Let's go 'round and 'round and 'round You can't vote me down If you can't pin me down...
Alito's lying, Bush is spying Either way, our democracy's dying With Kennedy's blarney and Biden's bluster Isn't there some strength you can muster? It's what the last stand was to Custer (Jimmy Stewart would do it He wouldn't get flustered) Please guys, stand up and filibuster!
