It appears that President Bush, in both his disregard for the FISA laws and his signing statements of laws that cross his desk, has decided he doesn't need any pesky legislative branch making laws or any judiciary interpreting them. And since Arlen Specter said that he would have "some hearings," "sometime" after the Alito hearings, and we haven't heard from our Democrats demanding that this should be done right NOW, it appears that our representatives are not too concerned that their laws now mean what King George says they mean.
So, why don't they all just go home and let King George rule in the way he is doing right now without the pretense of democracy? Why are they giving him cover to pretend that we are still a democracy without a totalitarian ruler? In my view, our government has become a drama acted out for the benefit of those who are unaware of what is happening.
So why, may I ask, are we talking about anything else but this??
Sure, Chris Matthews and Andrea Mitchell would love to keep talking about the Abramoff scandal, breathlessly stating over and over that many Democrats are trapped in this debauchery also. That takes the focus off of the party of Kings. If they were to focus on the FISA scandal with Bush spying on American citizens, breaking the law and going around the judges set up for this purpose, it might look like, GASP!, the Republican Congress is in cahoots with the Republican president and the mostly Republican judiciary in allowing the President to destroy the checks and balances of the three branches!!! Oh, MY, God, we cannot allow the people of the United States to see this, can we?? We cannot allow them to understand that what President Bush has effectively done is to call himself King, or dictator, or whatever title you choose which means "ruler without checks or accountability."
So why don't they all just go home and save us some money and the pretense that I am finding is leading to serious cognitive dissonance on my part? Or stand up against this tyranny right now. Not tomorrow. Not the next day. Not when Arlen Specter says that they should "look into" this. NOW. Or go the hell home.
What can we do? If we all called Democratic representatives, whether they are ours' or not, and demanded that they stand up against this RIGHT NOW, maybe we can inject some spine. In my view, if we have no checks and balances, everything else is just a show.
