Ministers Say They Blessed Seats Ahead of Alito Hearing
Ministers Say They Blessed
Seats Ahead of Alito Hearing

By JUNE KRONHOLZ
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
January 5, 2006 7:20 p.m.

WASHINGTON -- Insisting that God "certainly needs to be involved" in the Supreme Court confirmation process, three Christian ministers today blessed the doors of the hearing room where Senate Judiciary Committee members will begin considering the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito on Monday.

Capitol Hill police barred them from entering the room to continue what they called a consecration service. But in a bit of one-upsmanship, the three announced that they had let themselves in a day earlier, touching holy oil to the seats where Judge Alito, the senators, witnesses, Senate staffers and the press will sit, and praying for each of the 13 committee members by name.

"We did adequately apply oil to all the seats," said the Rev. Rob Schenck, who identified himself as an evangelical Christian and as president of the National Clergy Council in Washington.

(snip)

Rev. Schenck said he and Rev. Mahoney had blessed the same room before hearings for Chief Justice John Roberts last year. That hearing "went very well," Rev. Schenck said.

2. This is such a hilarious, yet disturbing, story.
Leaving aside the question of how these goofballs got access to this hearing room (what if they had been terrorists carrying bombs or anthrax? Great security procedures, huh?) -- Why do people think this sort of thing is normal or acceptable or not just batshit crazy? If a voodoo priest had snuck in and sacrificed a chicken the same fundies woulda had a cow.

And what about the oil on the chairs? Will the subjects of this foolishness appreciate grease spots on the seats of their Brooks Brothers pants?

Please, can't I move to another country now?

6. I'd like to move to another planet!
I imagine tomorrow morning Roy Moore of Alabama will show up with an 18-wheeler, bearing his 2-ton rock with the ten commandments written on it, and roll it right into the hearing room. And I assume no one will say a thing...

5. Need to get some wiccans up there
to do their stuff and even it up.
Suppose if Jesus was sitting next to Alito at the hearings he'd call Alito a lying cocksucker right after the Alito's first answer?

9. I think the congress-creatures themselves will do enough
desecrating of the chairs... just by sitting in them.

But I would like it very much if the hearing room was changed at the last minute. Just to piss off those busybody Puritans. Who the hell do they think they are, "blessing" things in OUR public buildings??

The whole thing makes me mad.

To contravene the "ministers'" meddling, we ought to have a voodoo priest or priestess stand out on the steps of the building during the hearing, sticking pins in an image of Scalito. And if anyone complained, well... what difference does it make WHOSE magic is allowed, if THOSE guys' magic has been allowed?
