How Should I Respond to What I Heard On My Local Radio Station?

A few weeks ago I returned to my hometown for the holidays. I like to listen to country music and there are two stations where I live. One night, the generic radio personality (probably the same for all of Clear Channel's clones) came on and said:

"If you think that the words 'under God' should be taken out of the Pledge of Allegience, this radio station is not for you..."

It may have been the corollary to that but my anger level at the time seems to indiciate that it was as above.

This seems to be a horrible marketing strategy in the first place and ignorant in the second.

Thoughts in general and on how I should "retaliate"?

1. I'd write a LTTE and speak my mind.

And mail them a copy to make sure they get the message.

Then I'd invest in XM and Sirius.

3. I would right an LTTE but the local paper is owned by a wingnut for the

sole purpose that he may have an outlet in the community...small chance it will run.

I do like the satellite radio idea. And perhaps let the sponsors of the station know that I left "free" radio because of that statement.

Makes me wanna gouge out my eyes everytime I drive down the road.

I tried a concise letter about Iraq a few years back and it never ran. Even hand wrote it and snail mailed it.

Perhaps it's time to try again.

And tell your friends to do the same....and call them from other phones and repeat the assertion.

You'd think they, as a music station, would support the rights of artists, after all, to not have their work screwed with--the original writer of the pledge, a minister, had NO under God in there at all (nor was there the phrase OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA either)...yet the friken Congress felt free to screw with HIS work, without his permission...

It's like some clown deciding that Shakespeare's works would benefit from a few "Hey mans" and "Yo, dudes" to reflect whatever they felt was the prevailing sense of the day. Tsk, tsk!

Regardless of how you feel on that particular issue, wouldn't it be nice to tune into a radio station when you are expecting pure entertainment and getting only pure entertainment? I'd tell them if I wanted political commentary, I'd listen to political talk radio!

20. I hear that crap on regular radio all the time

A pop music station I tune into occasionally had a DJ who would sign off by saying "America. One Nation Under GOD!" followed up by some snide comment about people who "have a problem with that."

Not only can I do without the political commentary, I'd also appreciate it if radio personalities on mainstream stations would refrain from religious harangues too.

7. I've met a lot of radio DJs & you don't have to be a genius to be one...

He was probably working on his own on this one.

Here's how you respond:
"I heard "__________" at 0:00 time on xx/xx/xxxx date. I'm surprised that you don't want my listenership. I'll pass the word on to the two friends I have who advertise with your station. Perhaps they'll be interested that I have chosen to subscribe to Sirius/XM because of this."

19. I worked in that industry

And there are a lot of very intelligent DJ's out there, but the DJ's are rarely given the freedom to say or play what they want. I've seen several DJ's get fired for speaking their mind and not that of the station itself. They, for the most part, are not allowed their own thoughts.

This came from much higher up, I'm quite sure.

Tell them you spent your last minute listening to that station because of their views.

13. That's what I'm thinking is best. And not just because of the views but

because of the idiocy involved in involving politics when trying to market a product.

It's just a great way to lose customers who would otherwise buy (or listen).

14. Hey..take them at their word.. stop listening...

and send them a note that you took their advice and that you hope they enjoy the decreased ratings.

and send the same note to their advertisers and invite your friends to do the same.


That'll get their attention..

17. Got me an XM radio last year...stays tuned to channel 167

Write them anyways and send it cc: to their advertising sponsors and send it to their sales manager...This will take some research but it will be far more effective than you think. Especially if you get a couple hundred letters like this to him. This shut down the TV clowns down here in Florida who tried to run their "Swiftboat" propaganda movie against Kerry last year and they saw their stock price fall by 25% and shut the hell up real quick.

16. Similar situation happened to my on Labor Day Holiday

A local church on the main street put up a sign that basically said that homosexuals were evil and should not be tolerated.

I sent a LTTE saying that the town was wrong to allow this church to display a political message alienating the tourists (it is a tourist trap) who travel through the town and keep the local economy going. I said that as a visitor I was highly offended and was reconsidering my travel plans.

Then I signed my partner's name cause My grandma has lived there all her life and too many people would recognize my last name.

Anyway, 2 weeks later my partner got a call from a person in the town (her number is listed so you can find on the web) who called her to thank her for speaking up about the sign.

Ironically, my grandmother now attends that church (she goes with the neighbor I think).

So I vote for LTTE to send a message.
