How to make a campaign contribution in someone else's name?
For his/her birthday, someone special wants me to donate money to Jennifer Granholm's campaign in his/her name. So I intend to write a check. (This comntribution will apply to the first quarter of 2006.)

How do I go about doing that? Do I just write the check and include a note saying that it's for the other person?

3. Sorry you can't do that, it's illegal...but there are alternatives..
You can give your friend money as a gift but not with the knowledge that they are a going to turn around and donate it to a campaign. That's a giant FEC no no..

If the money starts with you and ends up in a campaign through an intermediary and YOUR name isn't on the donation records, then the campaign will be in trouble, you will be in trouble, and your friend will be in trouble.

Here's my suggestion:

Tell your friend that you will donate the money by the book - legally that is, under your name because you want to make THEM happy.

Explain to them the legal consequences and that it could only hurt the campaign to do it the illegal way. I'm sure they will understand and not want to hurt this candidate they so admire.

If your friend can't afford to donate, please remind him or her that their time and personal effort is every bit as valuable if not more so to a campaign as money is. Ask them to PLEASE volunteer.

I was fortunate enough to be able to work for the Kerry campaign as a staff member (on a volunteer basis) here in Orlando last year and put in over 1000 hours doing not only the ordinary office stuff but also managing their computer problems and database issues. It was a tremendously satisfying experience.

Not only will it be a valuable life experience where they will learn new skills and make new friends and have a real adventure, it will also be very beneficial to the candidates too. If your friend is lucky, they may even get to know the candidate or at least get to meet them, look them in the eye and shake their hand.

Every candidates dream is to have a room full of TB'ers (True Believers) volunteering for them.

They can't buy that kind of loyalty and dedication and they can't afford to. Remind your friend that every hour that he or she answers the phone is an hour's salary that they won't have to pay to a paid staffer to whom it will just be a job, not a calling. That money they save on the volunteers salaries is money they can spend on something else like posters, buttons, bumper stickers, phone lists or TV ads.

Please volunteer yourself not just your money.

Democratically Yours,

Doug De Clue

Kerry Campaign Staff,
Mills Avenue Office,
Orlando, FL
