US executes 1,000th prisoner since 1976
Friday December 2, 2005

The US today executed its 1,000th prisoner since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

Kenneth Lee Boyd, a convicted double-murderer, was pronounced dead at 2.15am (0715 GMT) after a lethal injection of three drugs, said a spokesperson from North Carolina's department of corrections.

Boyd never denied shooting and killing his estranged wife and her father in 1988.

The supreme court rejected his final appeal and state governor Mike Easley decided not to stop the execution.

1. I felt sick when I heard this. How barbaric do we have to be?
I think we are one of the last hold outs with the death penalty. I don't think any countries in Europe still have it.

The families suffer the most and they haven't done anything wrong! I've seen documentaries and it is cruel and unusual punishment for the person and especially the families.
