Fox-Chávez spat erupts after Summit of Americas

Associated Press in Mexico City
Tuesday November 15, 2005
The Guardian

Venezuela recalled its ambassador to Mexico yesterday rather than apologise after President Hugo Chávez warned the Mexican leader Vicente Fox: "Don't mess with me."

Mexico responded by recalling its own diplomat. Mr Fox told CNN en Espanol he would meet his foreign secretary Ernesto Derbez to decide what to do next.

Mexico had threatened to sever diplomatic ties if Mr Chávez did not apologise. Mexico said that such comments struck at "the dignity of the Mexican people and government". Tensions had also spilled over at this month's Summit of the Americas in Argentina.

1. Fox is looking for a diversion for his party as election approaches
and the US probably asked him to do this.
