Kerry Suspects Election 2004 Was Stolen

By Robert Parry
November 6, 2005

Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate in 2004, has told acquaintances over the past year that he suspects that the election was stolen, but that he didn’t challenge the official results because he lacked hard proof and anticipated a firestorm of criticism if he pressed the point.

“Kerry heard all the disquieting stories” about voting irregularities in Ohio and other states, said Jonathan Winer, a longtime Kerry adviser and a former deputy assistant secretary of state. “But he didn’t have the evidence to do more.”

Kerry told Edwards in a phone call that Shrum and other advisers insisted that a concession was the best course. “They say that if I don’t pull out, they (Kerry’s political opponents) are going to call us sore losers." Edwards responded, “So what if they call us sore losers?” But Kerry pressed ahead with his decision to concede.

Mark Crispin Miller, a New York University professor and author of a new book about the 2004 election entitled Fooled Again, said he discussed the voting issue with Kerry. “Kerry’s caving in like that gave an enormous gift to the right wing,” Miller said. “They (the conservatives) could now claim, ‘well, even their (the Democrats’) candidate doesn’t think it was stolen. And they (Kerry and his advisers) left the American people hanging out to dry there.”

1. YES! I love Robert Parry --

He is actually a HUGE John Kerry booster -- has thanked Kerry profusely for taking him (Parry) seriously when Parry was trying to get Congress to pay attention to Iran-Contra.

Thus, the fact that Parry is willing to be publicly critical is excellent!

Edited for clarity.

2. after Kerry's staff response to Miller
I say the hell with Kerry. I won't vote for a dishonest wimp ever again. No matter how he rationalizes it.

3. Kerry plays it 'safe'.
I don't like that quality in him. I don't want to call it cowardice. Maybe he just doesn't like to leave his comfort zone. He didn't have to say "stolen", just keep pointing out irregularities until there was sufficient evidence.

5. I was VERY disappointed.
I spent a lot of time (which I could afford) and money (which I really couldn't) on that campaign. I thought it was important and worth it.
Too bad the candidate and his staff didn't.
I do feel like I was hung out to dry.

8. I remember the look on Edwards' face..think he felt the same way
When Edwards came out that fateful night and reminded America of the Kerry/Edwards pledge, that it ain't over until ALL VOTES ARE COUNTED..and a short while later Kerry said, ok, it's over..while the votes were still being counted..I swore Edwards looked like his heart fell..just as mine did.

4. I feel so sad about this whole incident.
I am not technically a Kerry supporter although I did work his campaign and I did vote for him.

It's just so sad to see a flap where support for election reform should be.

Please consider emailing your peeps about Mark's book tour. Go to his site and see if there are readings in your area: www.markcrispinmiller.com

Remember how you felt, watching all the hard work of our hearts and souls disappear before your eyes last November. Remember Chimp on television with his vacant smile. Remember the fallen, Katrina, Valerie Plame, Abu Graib. Remember Andy.

I swear, I feel like renting a truck and a bullhorn and peddling it myself.

trust my mouth.

And, still don't, really. :(
