What to Watch on TuesdayIt may be an off-year election, but Political Wire readers will find plenty of interesting races to watch on Tuesday night. Here's a quick rundown:
New Jersey Governor: Sen. Jon Corzine (D-NJ) has led Doug Forrester (R) in the polls through the entire campaign but a last minute barrage of negative ads featuring Corzine's ex-wife might help Forrester close the gap.
Virginia Governor: Recent polls show this race is a dead heat, though Tim Kaine (D) probably has a little more momentum over Jerry Kilgore (R) in the closing weeks. It's unclear if an 11th hour campaign swing by President Bush will help or hurt Kilgore's chances.
California Special Election: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) staked much of his political future on four ballot measures that range from limiting public spending to redistricting. Recent polls show the questions losing, however Mystery Pollster notes it's hard to poll ballot questions.
Ohio Redistricting: Democrats are taking advantages of a scandal-plagued Republican party by pushing several ballot measures, from non-partisan redistricting to changes in election administration. As a swing state in the 2004 presidential election, gains here by Democrats will be magnified.
Detroit Mayor: For months, it looked like Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick would be swept out of office after just one term. However, recent polls show Kilpatrick gaining on challenger Freeman Hendrix in the last several weeks. Getting young voters to the polls could make the difference on Tuesday.
San Diego Mayor: After a disputed election last year and the resignation of the ultimate victor, San Diego is having yet another mayoral race. Fifteen candidates entered the race and only two are left: Donna Frye (D) and Jerry Sanders (R). A recent poll gives Sanders the slight edge.
New York Mayor: The only real question is how large will Mayor Michael Bloomberg's (R) victory be over challenger Fernando Ferrer (D)? All recent polls show a landslide in the making.
