New Hampshire Exit Polls Present Warning Signs for President Bush

President Bush is paying heed not only to the criticism from his Democratic rivals but the dissatisfaction among independent voters who will play a crucial role in New Hampshire and other battleground states this November.

The president's trip to the Granite State Thursday comes after months in which the Democratic hopefuls charged through New Hampshire assailing his policies, from his tax cuts to handling of postwar Iraq to education.

In Tuesday's primary, independent voters played a major role, making up almost half -- 45 percent -- of New Hampshire's record Democratic primary turnout of about 200,000. Seven in 10 independents who voted in the primary said the nation's economy is not in good shape, according to an exit poll conducted for The Associated Press and television networks by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Almost nine in 10 said they were worried about the direction of the nation's economy in the next few years. Eight in 10 said the Bush tax cuts should be canceled altogether or only for the wealthy. The views about the economy of independents who voted in the Democratic primary were almost as sour as those of Democratic voters.

1. It's also worth noting that
Bush only got 85% of the Republican vote. The rest went with fringe candidates or write ins (lots of write ins for Dems).

Clearly, 15% aren't happy with Bush.

2. I had a long talk with a NH vet today.
He's a real New Hampshire type...closed mouthed...private...independent and proud of his self-sufficiency. He's in his 50's, has his own business and has voted republican often in the past. He said he had voted for Kerry and hoped for a Kerry/Edwards ticket. He said that Bush had screwed the veterans; that the veteran's hospitals were in terrible shape. He said that when Bush declared the war over on that aircraft carrier, combat pay stopped for the soldiers in Iraq. Yet, he said, those kids are still being killed and injured at the rate of 4 or 5 each day.

Finally, he said, Bush is a liar. This man is talking to his friends and neighbors. He gave me great hope. :-)
