I think the American people finally get it, my Dad turned...
Edited on Sat Oct-29-05 11:38 AM by danalytical
My father.. an Evangelical Christian, a Republican, an Iraq war supporter, Roe v Wade foe, staunch Bush supporter and voter, said to me....

paraphrasing, of course..

"I think the Iraq war was less about any imminent threat to us over WMD or anything like that, and more about removing a government we no longer wanted to see in place. Lets face it, there was no threat to us over there. The Iraqi government was mostly secular and Al Queda despised them, and so they didn't work together. There was not much of a threat of terrorism coming from Iraq. They had no airforce and no real arsenal of much consequence at all. etc. etc."

I mentioned that I am happy to see supporters like him finally coming to the realization about what happened and is still happening. He told me that he just wanted to believe we were really doing the right thing over there, and after 9/11 it seemed that we wanted to remove any threat to us in that area. (Which he no longer believes is the reason we went to Iraq).

On the CIA leak case, when I mentioned I think it's possible we will see more about Cheney's direct involvement in the leak, he mentioned that it's possible Libby will just stick to his story and be the fall guy like Oliver North did during Iran Contra. It's better to be charged with the perjury and obstruction chyarges then it is to tell the truth and allow the investigation to go up the ladder and open you and your superiors up to the more serious charge of the underlying matter. He CLEARLY believes Cheney and Bush both knew and acted in the whole CIA leak affair, and it seems he also believes they were stifling critics of their faked WMD intel and claims.

Friends. This seems like a small matter in relation to everything that's happening around the world and here at home, but it is HUGE if you consider that staunch Republican Evangelicals like my father are on OUR side on nearly all matters concerning the Iraq war and the CIA leak case. He said that it's horrible when our leaders lie to us and he is saddened by it. He says it's bad for the country.

I think it's all over for the neo cons. If we convinced my father, we can convince anybody. He was on the exact opposite of almost every single thing he just told me. I am in shock. He really gets it now. The lying, that's what gets them I think.

1. That's good he realizes.
The problem of I'm having with certain family members is that, despite their realizing the truth about certain Booosh Administration policies, they still would vote for him if the election was today (and they still plan on voting for Rethuglicans in 2006).

12. Yep.
Maybe when they say, "I'm against abortion," I should say, "It's SO easy to say that."

"A true patriot supports free birth control, free distribution of the Morning After Pill, Safe Reliquishment programs, prenatal care, wellness exams for all children, and monthly stipends for financially-challenged parents who are adopting."

"That's DOING something to make it safe and healthy for ALL children."

Sorry - end of rant!

3. that would be nice
but my father hasn't changed his mind about Iraq or the Administration yet. Perhaps if I could get him to turn off Fox News?....

I'll keep hoping though. :)

the minority literate faction of the rep party.
If only more of them knew how to read.

5. Bravo to your father!
The MSM is still reporting that something like 86% of Bush supporters still support him, and only 6% have peeled off.

I believe I have personally met or read on DU about every one of that 6%, haven't you? :)

6. They're getting "born again" everywhere!
My elderly Repub neighbor (non-fundie) has written an angry LTTE complaining that in-your-face fundamentalists do not represent HIS Republican Party!

Oh my.

8. We had this discussion last night ...
... my husband and I. He mentioned that he believes there is way more protest to this government than we're seeing or hearing about -- thanks to the ever-sleeping MSM.

And we discussed the fact that we do have NEW allies in our war against BU$HCO -- the formerly loyal supporters who now realize they've been lied to, manipulated, financially screwed, et cetera.

We Dems know how mad we've been from day one of this administration. Imagine how mad you'd be if you'd actually BELIEVED their constant spin about the necessity for war, and all of the other lies about the economy, etc., and then realized you'd been PLAYED FOR A CHUMP ALL ALONG!!!

There are a LOT of really ANGRY people out there, and the angriest of them are reformed Bushies.

9. The lying does get them.
I had a conversation with a friend, who is a Repub and still angry about Clinton lying. He said (it's a talking point), "... if Clinton lied about sex, he'll lie about anything."

Bear in mind this man has a very good marriage, very strong and faithful, both spouses. He can't quite grasp that a marriage can go sour for all kinds of reasons.

So, I told him that sex is the one thing people will lie about and yet not lie about anything else at all. He doesn't believe me. Boy, I'd like to give him an earful about someone in town, a pillar of the community, whom he respects a good deal. Hoo-hah!

Anyway, I hope my friend figures out that the lying goes all the way to the top. I want to remind him that Rove and Libby "supposedly" lied to McClellan *wink nudge* and bush had to have known of Rove's involvement.

I wish your dad well. If Judas Miller had been open about this and told the truth, the investigation would have concluded by Oct. 2004 and bush would not be in the Monkey Palace now. It's all so sad, it really is.

11. I'm having a similar experience with my evangelical brother
He never would listen to me, his "little sister" (even tho I'm over 50). But because of me, he started to listening to Wes Clark.

At first, he would only tell me how much he disagreed with Clark. But because he respected Clark, and because Clark has been on Fox--the channel always on in his house when there's no ballgame--he's kept on listening. Now, with so many other pieces falling into place, he's beginning to admit that Wes was right all along. He's not quite there yet, but he knows there something wrong with the way things are.

It's hard to turn these folks. Probably harder for those of us in the same family. But it can be done with persistence and patience.

13. Great news. Now don't back down but keep him updated on the
facts that you will get from breaking news here and let him continue to see the light and the deceit, criminality and anti-Christian and anti-American ways of this, the most evil administration in my 54 years on earth.

There is no compassion in them.only greed, narcissm and hate.
