The 2008 Presidential race, while of some importance, is, to me, a complete back-burner issue. It's a distraction now especially when our most important task should be taking back control of Congress. This downhill slide began with the Newt and his Contract On America and accelerated during the downfall of Clinton and the stolen 2000 election.
Forget who's going to be President in 2008. Our best chance to pull ourselves out of the crapper is to regain a true "moral majority" in the halls of Congress.
A Democratic majority could start a no-holds-barred investigation into all the lies leading up to the war, the voting "irregularities," and the culture of corruption that seems to pervade the Republican Party. And it could happen while Bush is still in office, further alienating the populace from the Republicans long enough to gain a real chance at undoing the damage these creeps have done over the course of the last decade.
We could get a real chance at Universal Healthcare, at a true Living Wage, at meaningful education reform, and at creating a military, homeland security, and emergency response apparatus that actually works. We can pass windfall taxes to take some of the stolen profits back from the oil companies, we can initiate an "Apollo Project" for alternative energy programs...
But the first step is Congress. Without Congress, a Democratic President would be nothing more than another sitting duck for the attack machine.
Please focus, people. Our children and grandchildren are counting on us.
