WP: Scooter Libby (More Leaks from the WH)
In the Spotlight And on the Spot
'Scooter' Libby, Backstage No More

By Mark Leibovich
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 23, 2005; Page A01

I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is known for his sarcastic, world-weary and at times dark sense of humor. He once quipped to an aide that he planned to stay as Vice President Cheney's top adviser until "I get indicted or something."

That was during President Bush's first term, brighter days for the administration and, more to the point, before a special prosecutor was investigating Libby's possible role in disclosing the identity of a covert CIA officer, Valerie Plame.

The joke -- recounted by the aide, who no longer works in the administration -- sounded absurd at the time, given Libby's renown for canniness and prudence.

2. Oh Jeeeez
He adheres to a favorite Cheney maxim that the vice president credits to the late Sam Rayburn, a longtime House speaker: "You never get in trouble for something you don't say."

---snip---

Sam Rayburn would kick Cheney's ass if he were alive today. Literally.

5. This is obviously Libby's friends trying to rehabilitate
him since for several days Rove's cohorts were on the move to blame it all on Libby. Pretty funny.

You do get a sense of what the war is really all about and what these people are really all about: stroking their own inflated egos. The ridiculous grandiosity of these pricks like Libby and Cheney who think of themselves as "great men" fulfilling their "destiny" to confront evil. The pomposity and egotism of these men is really beyond belief. The fucking historical novel. The cowboy outfit, the cultivated air of mystery. The fawning of people like Mary Matalin who say that when he and Cheney interact it's like some game of chess. The comparisons to Churchill and Pee Wee Reese ("I had the range but not the arm"...Jesus Christ.). This guy's a fucking legend in his own mind. And this administration is full of assholes like that and this is precisely the guy that almost every asshole you see driving a truck or SUV with a W04 bumper sticker wants to be and the image he wants to project.

It just really makes me want to vomit.

9. LOVED the bit about the novel.
Originally set in Vermont, but could work as well in Japan? Cripes. Was Karen Hughes his researcher?

10. That's so comically absurd
It could be in Chris Elliot's new book.

But he is DEAD SERIOUS! And he is sending our kids to war!
