The Bush Legacy - Wishful Thinking
This came from the WSJ's Taranto "Best of the Web" that is mass mailed.

The Bush Legacy

Forget about Hurricane Katrina, the Valerie Plame kerfuffle, the federal deficit, even Harriet Miers... The reality is that President Bush's legacy will be judged on two things: whether America is successful in Iraq, and, if so, whether success in Iraq helps promote democracy and discourage terrorism elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

If the former happens, history will recognize Bush as a near-great president; if the latter, as a great one.

======

The reality, of course, is that most Americans do not care what happens in foreign countries, do not even care what happens in the next county, if it does not affect their lives directly.

Yes, for the families of the dead and the wounded the result may mean something; may even bring some kind of closure. But for the rest - give it a year and most will not even remember that Iraq ever mattered.

And it is not as if we can see stable prices of oil and gas as a result of the war.

1. Glue sniffing is a major problem on the WSJ I see
A near great president if he is unsuccessful in Iraq? Thousands of lives and Billion of dollars wasted make him near great. Lord save us from Greatness.

4. WTF? He has already fallen into the toilet.
His legacy will be of shame, scandal, and multiple national tragedies. And no, his "kerfuffles" (crimes) will not be forgotten. What do you remember about Warren G. Harding, besides the one major oil-related crime that brought his adminstration down in disgrace. Whatever else he may have done is lone forgotten. Given that Bush has instigated multiple major oil-related crimes, and covered them up with even bigger national-security crimes, it wouldn't matter if Iraq became Switzerland. Bush will always be remembered as a miserable failure and a national disgrace.

2. What about the shambles he has made of domestic policy?
I would think that would automatically disqualify him for being thought of as "great," regardless of what happens in Iraq and the "broader Middle East."

And what about all of the lies he spun to get us into Iraq?

What about all of the lies he spun about every other little thing?

Must step away from computer before head explodes. :nuke:
